Arsenal Bolsters Defence with Signing of Ecuadorian International Piero Hincapié
london, UK – Arsenal has announced the signing of Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen, the club confirmed in a statement today. The move strengthens Arsenal’s defensive options as they continue their pursuit of Premier League glory.
“We are delighted to welcome Piero to the club,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. “Piero has a great physical presence and, with his versatility and tactical adaptability, will significantly strengthen our defensive options.”
The deal is initially a loan, but Arsenal have the option to make the transfer permanent for a reported fee of approximately £45 million (equivalent to €51.2 million or $60 million). Hincapié will wear the number 5 shirt for the Gunners and is expected to join the squad following his international duty with Ecuador for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Hincapié, 22, rose to prominence with Independiente del Valle in Ecuador (2019-2020) and Talleres de Córdoba in argentina (2020-2021) before making the move to Europe with Bayer Leverkusen in 2021. He was a key member of Leverkusen’s historic 2023-2024 season,contributing to their Bundesliga and German Cup double.
The Ecuadorian international is Arsenal’s eighth signing of the summer, joining Viktor Gyökeres, Martín Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, and Eberrechi Eze as new additions to the Emirates Stadium.
The news comes after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday. Arsenal currently sits with 6 points after three matchdays in the Premier league, aiming to end their nearly two-decade wait for a league title, having last lifted the trophy in 2004.
