Ben & Jerry’s Co-founder Jerry Greenfield Exits Over Values Dispute

Ben & Jerry’s Co-founder Jerry Greenfield Resigns, Citing Disagreements Over Company Values

Burlington, VT – Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of the iconic American ‍ice cream brand Ben & Jerry’s, announced Wednesday his departure from the company, stemming from disputes over its direction under parent company Unilever. Greenfield,⁣ who sold his stake in Ben & Jerry’s to Unilever in ⁢2000, stated he could no longer remain with the company ”in all ⁢conscience” after 47 years.

The resignation follows ongoing tensions regarding Ben & Jerry’s commitment to its stated values of social⁢ and ⁣environmental⁢ activism. In 2022, the brand unsuccessfully attempted to prevent Unilever⁢ from selling its ice cream in West ⁢Bank settlements, a move‍ Greenfield and ⁤co-founder Ben Cohen viewed as a betrayal of those principles.

“It was with ‌a broken heart that ⁤I decided that I could no longer, in all conscience, and after 47 years, remaining an employee of Ben⁢ & Jerry’s,” Greenfield wrote in a letter posted Tuesday on X by Ben Cohen.

Founded in 1978, Ben & Jerry’s built a reputation for advocating for issues like environmental protection, human rights, and social⁢ equality. The 2000 acquisition by Unilever included provisions designed to protect the brand’s “integrity” through an autonomous board of directors. However, Greenfield asserts that this independence ⁣has eroded.

“The company has been reduced‌ to silence, sidelined ‍by fear of annoying power,” Greenfield’s letter continued, adding his‍ disappointment with⁢ the US governance’s policies regarding civil rights, voting rights, immigrant rights, women’s rights, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Unilever‌ is currently preparing to spin off its ice cream division, “The Magnum‌ Ice Cream Company,” as a separate entity based ‍in Amsterdam, slated for November.

This is ⁤not the first instance of friction between Unilever⁢ and Ben & Jerry’s. Cohen and Greenfield ‍recently called for the brand to⁣ regain its independence in another open letter.

A Unilever‌ spokesperson responded, stating, “We ⁢do not share the point of view of Jerry Greenfield and wanted to initiate a constructive ⁣dialog with the two co-founders on the way of strengthening the strong position of Ben & ⁢Jerry’s in the world, based on its values.”

Notably,Ben Cohen was recently removed from a parliamentary hearing in Washington D.C. in May after criticizing the American government’s support for israel’s actions in Gaza.

Swiss Government’s Wine Cellar Revealed: A Taste of Cantonal Pride

Bern, Switzerland – For the first time, the full inventory of the Swiss Federal Council’s wine cellar has been made public, offering a glimpse into ‍the preferences of the nation’s‌ leaders and a ⁣festivity of Swiss terroir. The list, obtained by RTS, details 63 wines currently stocked as of August 1, 2025.

The cellar, holding up to 2000 bottles, reflects a tradition of serving wines from the cantons of⁣ origin of the Federal Advisers. “The preferences of federal advisers can be found hear, in the cellar. They like to serve a wine from their‌ canton of origin, ‌even if it is not generalized. The cellar is a reflection of the fluctuation of the Swiss government,” explained Jacques Chapatte, attendant for facts for the federal ⁤chancellery, in a recent RTS broadcast.

The ‍annual‍ budget for the cellar ‌is approximately 70,000 francs, with⁣ 25% allocated to ⁣beer and mineral water. ⁢While the selection is considered successful in promoting Swiss wine, according to‍ Antoine Sicard, Best Sommelier in Switzerland 2023, “we could drink better still.” Sicard, of the Wenger‌ house in Noblemont, suggests the cellar could further showcase the diversity of Swiss wines by including lesser-known indigenous grape varieties.‌ He ⁣acknowledges, however, the budgetary constraints, noting that acquiring prestigious Swiss⁤ bottles for under 35 francs is‍ challenging.

A complete list of the wines is ⁤available here: https://www.rts.ch/articles/2025/document/28997442.html

US Market Reaction: Jobs Data, Tesla Pay & Lululemon Downgrade

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 6, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

US Economy Slows, Fueling Rate Hike Expectations & Market Swings

Recent US jobs data revealed a weaker-than-expected increase of only 22,000 jobs in August, alongside downward revisions for the previous two months. This has intensified expectations for a potential interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve in mid-September, and raised concerns about a possible recession.

Commerzbank analysts noted the slowdown mirrors conditions preceding the fed’s last rate hike cycle, stating the fed may feel pressure to “act faster now” after waiting too long. VP Bank echoed this sentiment, declaring the US economy is “on a descent” and the labor market data indicates a “paralyzed” economy.

Market Highlights:

Semiconductors Surge: Broadcom shares jumped over 9% following strong earnings driven by demand for AI solutions.
Tesla Gains on Musk Deal: Tesla stock rose 3.6% after unveiling a potentially $1 billion remuneration package for CEO Elon Musk, contingent on ambitious company goals.Analysts at UBS believe the deal signals Tesla’s future potential and aligns Musk’s interests with shareholders. A shareholder vote is scheduled for November 6th.
Lululemon Plummets: The athletic apparel company saw its share price fall nearly 20% after lowering its business outlook.
BioNTech Rises on Cancer Therapy: BioNTech shares increased over 8% following promising interim results from a breast cancer therapy study.

Geothermal Prospecting Begins in North Vaudois Region

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 5, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Geothermal Exploration Campaign Launches in North Vaudois, Switzerland

Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland ⁤- ‍ A large-scale geothermal prospecting campaign, dubbed ‍”Geothermy,” has begun in the North Vaudois region of Switzerland, encompassing⁢ 29 municipalities and ⁢nearly 100 square kilometers. ⁢The project, spearheaded ⁣by the Yom consortium – comprised of Y-CAD, Orllati Real Estate, and natural Malmenergie – aims to map the ‍region’s subsurface resources, including potential⁣ geothermal⁢ and water reserves.

The first phase of‌ the campaign, running until the end of September,⁣ will⁣ focus on identifying locations for the installation of 20,000 sensors (geophones).Data acquisition will then commence on‍ October 20th, utilizing vibrating ⁢trucks operating between 8 p.m. and 5 ⁤a.m. for approximately two and⁢ a half weeks.

“It is a question of establishing a three-dimensional cartography of the subsoil. It will ⁤aim to better know our ⁣geothermal resources, but also ‌simply in water,” ⁤explained Pierre-Alain Kreutschy,⁤ director of ⁢Y-CAD, during ‍a press briefing.

While the Yverdon ⁣region is historically known for its thermal baths and hot water sources, the precise location of viable geothermal targets ‍remains‌ unknown. “Our goal is to find potential⁤ targets,” Kreutschy added.

Currently, the ‌project is focused on data collection, with any potential drilling operations not ⁣anticipated ⁣before 2028, according to David Polasek of Hydro-Geo‍ Environnement.⁣ The Yom consortium will notify‍ residents of the 29 affected municipalities – a population of between 30,000 and 40,000 – regarding the schedule of the vibrating trucks. Polasek assured that the vibrations pose no danger to homes and⁤ will cause minimal ⁣discomfort, estimated at around five minutes‌ per resident.

The prospecting campaign carries‌ a price tag⁢ of ‍7.6 million Swiss francs,‌ with 60% ⁢of the funding provided by the Federal Energy Office and the remainder covered by⁣ the consortium companies.

This campaign follows similar geothermal prospecting efforts earlier ‌in 2025 on the Vaud coast‌ and in the Lausanne region, and precedes a planned exploration in ‌the Broye district. the Canton of Vaud estimates that ⁣hydrothermal⁤ geothermal energy could perhaps meet‌ up to 25% of the canton’s heating needs, with the State ⁤council anticipating the ⁤development of around 20 geothermal production sites by 2050.

Previous deep⁢ borehole explorations in the canton – in Lavey-les-Bains, Montagny-Près-yverdon, and⁣ Vinzel – have faced challenges. The Lavey-les-Bains and‍ Montagny-près-Yverdon projects were halted due to ‌insufficient drilling speed, while the ⁤Vinzel borehole yielded water ‌that was not hot enough.

Washington Lowers Customs Duties on Japanese Cars – RTS.CH

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 5, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

President Donald Trump signed a decree lowering customs duties on Japanese cars at 15% on Thursday, instead of 25% so far. They confirm the interpretation that the Japanese government had given from the agreement signed with Washington.

These surcharges will come into force seven days after the publication of the new decree in the American Official Journal, which is not yet effective.

Depending on the details of the decree, the agreement signed at the end of July between the United States and Japan therefore provides for a 15% customs ceiling for the majority of Japanese products exported to the United States, those being already affected by a surcharge beyond this limit seeing their rates unchanged.

An exemption for products sought

Certain sectors, like aeronautics, raw materials not available in the United States or generic drugs are free from this rate of 15%, specifies the decree.

>> Read also: What is a customs right?

Seeing the surcharge imposed on its cars set at 15%, compared to 25% for the majority of vehicles now entering the United States, Japan obtains a treatment similar to that granted to the European Union. The document, published on the White House website, raises doubts about the conditions of the agreement signed in late July between Tokyo and Washington.

Considered counterparts

Signed on July 22, the agreement provides for certain counterparts from Japanese companies, in particular via investments up to “550 billion dollars” of which “90% of the profits generated will remain in the United States”, said the President on his social social network.

Japan has also been committed to buying “for eight billion dollars of American products”, without specifying calendar, and the two countries must study the conditions of purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Alaska.

Finally, Tokyo has promised to buy “American manufacturing aircraft, including 100 Boeing”, according to the White House, as well as “lifting long-standing restrictions” which prevented access to American cars to the Japanese market.
