AKIRA Ransomware Attacks: Switzerland Companies Targeted, Millions in Damage

by Priya Shah – Business Editor October 16, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

AKIRA Ransomware ⁣Group ‌Intensifies Attacks in Switzerland

A surge in ransomware attacks attributed to the AKIRA hacker group is impacting Swiss ⁤companies, with approximately 200 businesses ‌already victimized. The financial damage is⁢ estimated‌ at several million Swiss francs, and hundreds of⁣ millions⁣ of dollars globally.

A criminal inquiry, led by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPC) and coordinated by Fedpol with support ‌from the ‌Federal Office for Cybersecurity (OFCS), has been underway ‌as April 2024, focusing ‌on attacks occurring between May 2023⁢ and September 2025. International authorities are also collaborating on the case.

Authorities report a notable increase in‌ AKIRA-linked attacks in recent months, reaching a record 4-5 instances per week ‍in Switzerland.

Double Extortion Tactics

AKIRA, active sence march 2023, employs a “double extortion” strategy.they first steal sensitive data from victims, then encrypt it, demanding a ransom for⁤ both its return and to prevent public release on the Darknet.

While 200 companies have been identified as victims, authorities believe the‍ actual number is higher, ‌as many businesses choose⁣ to pay ransoms (typically in Bitcoin) and avoid reporting the incidents to protect their reputations.

Recommendations for⁢ Businesses

Authorities strongly advise against paying⁤ ransoms, urging victims‍ to report attacks to facilitate investigations. They emphasize ‌that reporting incidents increases the likelihood of‍ disrupting these criminal operations.

Key vulnerabilities exploited⁢ by AKIRA include outdated systems ⁣and unsecured remote access ⁤points like VPNs ‌and RDP,notably those lacking ⁤two-factor authentication (2FA).

In‌ the event of an attack, immediate steps shoudl be taken: disconnect all internet connections, verify‍ and secure⁢ backups, and physically isolate infected systems from the network.

Migros Simplifies Brands: 1000 Products Removed – RTS.CH

Migros Removes 1000‌ Products, ⁢Simplifies Own Brands

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND⁢ – Migros, Switzerland‘s largest ‍retail cooperative, is set to remove 1000 products from its own-brand ⁤portfolio and rebrand a number of others as part of a major simplification initiative, the company announced today.

The move, designed ⁤to streamline the ⁤shopping ⁢experience and‌ eliminate product duplication, is part of a larger plan to reduce the number of distributor ⁤brands offered by Migros. The⁣ retailer previously announced it would withdraw‍ 80 of its ‌250⁤ distributor brands over the next two ‍years, with a⁢ target⁤ of⁢ reaching approximately⁤ 100⁣ brand eliminations by⁤ 2030, as reported by NZZ AM SONNTAG in June.

Focus on Core Brands and Niche Product Consolidation

The changes will primarily affect lesser-known niche brands. ⁤Products like “Oh!” – a protein range – ⁣and “Alexis” – an olive oil line -‍ will ⁣continue to be ⁢available, but will be⁣ rebranded under the main “Migros” label, receiving new packaging⁢ in the process. This consolidation aims to present a more unified and easily navigable⁣ product selection⁢ for customers.

Popular and well-established brands,⁤ such as Blévita, ‌will remain in Migros’ product catalog.

Migros stated that the rationalization is intended to improve ⁤customer ‍orientation within stores and to reduce‍ operational costs related to delivery, storage, and staffing.

This isn’t the first time ⁢Migros has undertaken such a streamlining effort. ⁤According to CH Média, the company secretly reduced its assortment by 10%, ⁤or 4000 items, back in 2012.

Trade Association Sues Temu Over Unfair Practices

by Priya Shah – Business Editor October 3, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Trade Association Backs VKI Lawsuit ‍Against Temu, Cites “Dark ‌Patterns” ‌and Unfair ⁢Competition

Vienna, Austria – The Austrian trade association, represented ‍by‍ Managing Director Rainer Will, has welcomed the lawsuit filed by the verbraucherschutzvereinigung (VKI – Consumer Protection Association) against online ⁢marketplace temu. The legal action, brought before the Vienna Commerce Court, alleges violations of both the Austrian Law against Unfair Competition (UWG) and the EU Digital Services Act (DSA).

Will described ‌the lawsuit as a necessary “Action ExtraSchorge” against what he termed one of the world’s largest online retailers⁤ of ⁢low-cost goods. The core of the ‍complaint focuses on Temu’s ⁣alleged use⁣ of “manipulative design patterns” – ofen referred to as “Dark Patterns” – intended to encourage impulsive purchases and⁣ the ⁤release⁢ of user data.

According to data cited by the trade association from the “E-Commerce-Markt⁢ Austria 2025” report by ECDB, Temu has⁤ rapidly become the fourth largest eCommerce⁣ marketplace in Austria, generating over €340 million in revenue since its entry into the Austrian market in ⁢2023. Will asserted this growth⁣ was fueled by unfair practices, initially highlighted by a UWG complaint filed by the trade⁣ association 14 months prior.

The‍ association also points to⁣ a broader issue of inconsistent enforcement of EU regulations,‌ despite Temu being designated a‌ “Very Large Online Platform” under the Digital Services Act, subjecting it to increased‌ scrutiny. They argue the ‍current EU ⁣legal‌ framework inadequately addresses the⁢ responsibilities⁤ of online marketplaces regarding goods sold by third-party vendors.

This lawsuit follows a UWG complaint filed ⁣by the trade⁢ association with the Federal Competition Authority (BWB) in September 2024, alleging misleading claims regarding:

* Limited-time offer availability
* Price reductions
* Product scarcity

Will‍ confirmed that the ⁣initial UWG complaint had already ⁢yielded some results, with Temu reportedly ceasing some of the challenged behaviors. Though, ⁤he emphasized the continued presence of violations, making the‌ VKI’s lawsuit‍ a crucial step towards ensuring fair competition and holding Temu accountable. “Even ⁣large marketplaces such‌ as Temu are not above the law!” he stated.

Furthermore, the trade association advocates for Temu, and similar ⁤platforms, ‍to be considered a “deemed importer” ‌responsible for⁣ ensuring compliance with fiscal regulations, including the accurate calculation and payment of import sales tax and customs duties.

More details on this topic can be found in the trade association’s HV-ECOMMERCE Dossier: https://www.handelsverband.at/fileadmin/content/Presse_Publikationen/Leitfaeden_Whitepaper/2025-06-24_Dossier_Anti-Ultra-Fast-Fashion-Gesetz_final.pdf

WhatsApp Security: Former Official Accuses Company of Data Risks

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 20, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

WhatsApp⁣ Faces Scrutiny ‌After Former Employee Alleges Safety Violations

Geneva, Switzerland – WhatsApp is under fire following accusations from a former⁤ employee alleging weaknesses in the platformS data⁢ security practices. The allegations center around potential violations of data and surveillance obligations, potentially running afoul ‍of American stock ‍market laws and carrying a potential fine of up to five million dollars. While prison terms for responsible⁢ managers are theoretically possible, they are considered ‌rare.

The situation appears ⁢to stem⁤ from⁣ a labor conflict between Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, and the former employee, with similar past cases often resulting in settlements or court-granted remedies for whistleblowers. Meta could also attempt⁢ to weather the controversy.

Concerns extend to WhatsApp’s ‌transparency regarding ⁢user‍ safety.According to sources, the company’s specific‌ data security measures are largely ⁤unknown outside of disclosures made by whistleblowers. The encryption of conversations is described as not being clearly defined, with other⁢ market systems offering potentially stronger protection. Data collection and linkage to other Meta applications are acknowledged as integral to the company’s revenue ‌model. Meta maintains it invests substantially in data⁤ and data protection.

Experts note a fundamental trade-off between security and user experience. Enhanced security often introduces complexity, potentially hindering ease of use.⁣ At WhatsApp, the priority appears to be maximizing user engagement and time spent on the application, suggesting internal prioritization of⁢ growth over absolute security.

“[Reinforced security] generally means that it becomes more complex to use such an application,” a source⁢ stated. “At whatsapp, it is indeed obvious that the⁤ priority is that as many as possible of users and users spend as much⁢ time as possible on the application.”

Hybrid Car Battery Issues: Short Trips & Environmental Impact

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 20, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Hybrid Cars: The ‍Impact of Infrequent use on Battery Life

Hybrid vehicles, combining petrol‌ adn⁣ electric power, are often touted as‌ an environmentally⁣ friendly option. However, a growing number of owners are experiencing unexpectedly short lifespans for⁢ their 12-volt batteries⁢ – the battery powering the car’s onboard electronics, not used for starting a combustion engine. this issue is particularly prevalent for those who⁣ drive infrequently or‌ make⁢ primarily short trips.

One owner of a 2019 Toyota Corolla Hybrid reported needing‌ to replace⁣ the 12-volt battery twice already,a stark contrast to‍ the five to ten-year ‌lifespan he experienced with previous petrol-powered vehicles. While Toyota recommends increased driving‍ as a solution, the underlying issue appears to be a design characteristic of hybrid systems.

According to Toyota, hybrid 12-volt batteries are intentionally smaller ‍than those found in conventional cars. This reduction⁤ in size contributes to⁤ weight savings and improved efficiency. However,⁢ it also makes them more vulnerable to discharge from limited ⁢use and cold weather.

The manufacturer maintains this isn’t a case of planned obsolescence, stating ⁤that most⁣ drivers won’t encounter‌ problems. But for⁣ those driving less than 3,000 kilometers per‍ year, or who frequently leave their vehicle unused ‌for extended periods, premature⁤ battery wear and potential starting issues are⁤ a real concern.

Nicolas Leuba, president of the Vaudish Union of garagistes, confirms this isn’t isolated to Toyota. ‌”I questioned several garage owners. We have noticed this problem in several brands,” he stated on‌ a recent radio program. While the smaller battery size explains some⁣ of the vulnerability, Leuba believes it doesn’t fully account for the observed lack of reliability.

Experts ⁢emphasize ⁣that choosing⁣ the right vehicle for your driving habits is crucial. Leuba ⁢stresses that different engine types require different usage patterns. For hybrid vehicles, he suggests a revised sales pitch:⁢ “If you drive your vehicle regularly, it ⁢is the ideal vehicle for you. If, conversely, you live in the mountains, far from the city and you rarely use your ⁣vehicle, a hybrid is ⁤not panacea, even an ecological misinterpretation.”

This raises ⁢questions about ⁣the ⁤overall environmental impact of hybrid technology when factoring in the ‌increased frequency of battery replacements, particularly⁢ for drivers whose‌ lifestyles don’t align with the vehicle’s optimal usage profile.

Ben & Jerry’s Co-founder Jerry Greenfield Exits Over Values Dispute

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 17, 2025

Ben & Jerry’s Co-founder Jerry Greenfield Resigns, Citing Disagreements Over Company Values

Burlington, VT – Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of the iconic American ‍ice cream brand Ben & Jerry’s, announced Wednesday his departure from the company, stemming from disputes over its direction under parent company Unilever. Greenfield,⁣ who sold his stake in Ben & Jerry’s to Unilever in ⁢2000, stated he could no longer remain with the company ”in all ⁢conscience” after 47 years.

The resignation follows ongoing tensions regarding Ben & Jerry’s commitment to its stated values of social⁢ and ⁣environmental⁢ activism. In 2022, the brand unsuccessfully attempted to prevent Unilever⁢ from selling its ice cream in West ⁢Bank settlements, a move‍ Greenfield and ⁤co-founder Ben Cohen viewed as a betrayal of those principles.

“It was with ‌a broken heart that ⁤I decided that I could no longer, in all conscience, and after 47 years, remaining an employee of Ben⁢ & Jerry’s,” Greenfield wrote in a letter posted Tuesday on X by Ben Cohen.

Founded in 1978, Ben & Jerry’s built a reputation for advocating for issues like environmental protection, human rights, and social⁢ equality. The 2000 acquisition by Unilever included provisions designed to protect the brand’s “integrity” through an autonomous board of directors. However, Greenfield asserts that this independence ⁣has eroded.

“The company has been reduced‌ to silence, sidelined ‍by fear of annoying power,” Greenfield’s letter continued, adding his‍ disappointment with⁢ the US governance’s policies regarding civil rights, voting rights, immigrant rights, women’s rights, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Unilever‌ is currently preparing to spin off its ice cream division, “The Magnum‌ Ice Cream Company,” as a separate entity based ‍in Amsterdam, slated for November.

This is ⁤not the first instance of friction between Unilever⁢ and Ben & Jerry’s. Cohen and Greenfield ‍recently called for the brand to⁣ regain its independence in another open letter.

A Unilever‌ spokesperson responded, stating, “We ⁢do not share the point of view of Jerry Greenfield and wanted to initiate a constructive ⁣dialog with the two co-founders on the way of strengthening the strong position of Ben & ⁢Jerry’s in the world, based on its values.”

Notably,Ben Cohen was recently removed from a parliamentary hearing in Washington D.C. in May after criticizing the American government’s support for israel’s actions in Gaza.
