Can AI Promote Inclusion and Accessibility for People with Disabilities?

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 12, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

AI: A Pathway to a More Equitable Future for People with Disabilities

Artificial intelligence is increasingly ⁢recognized not as a threat to employment, but as‌ a powerful tool for empowerment, particularly for individuals with⁤ disabilities.when designed with accessibility‍ and lived experience ⁤at its core,AI offers‍ the potential to dismantle long-standing barriers and unlock new opportunities for learning, work, and full societal participation.

Surashree Rahane, founder and CEO of Yearbook Canvas, embodies this shift. Born with physical disabilities, including club foot and polymelia, she champions the idea of creating opportunities rather than simply seeking‌ them.Rahane’s company focuses on accessible digital yearbooks, and she’s currently collaborating with newton School of⁣ Technology to develop AI-powered learning tools that adapt ⁢to individual‍ student needs. ⁤She cautions, though, that AI’s potential will only be ⁣realized if it’s intentionally ‍trained to understand⁤ and accommodate diverse learners, warning against the risk of perpetuating ⁤existing biases through “a shinier version of the same old bias.”

This sentiment underscores a crucial point: technology alone isn’t enough. True inclusion requires a fundamental shift in mindset and a‌ commitment⁣ to shared design.

The‌ impact of AI is already being ‍felt. Assistive technologies, ranging from voice-to-speech applications to gesture-controlled wheelchairs, are breaking down barriers previously considered insurmountable. Prateek Madhav, CEO ⁢of AssisTech Foundation, describes AI as “the great equaliser,” highlighting that while broader anxieties exist about job ‌displacement, AI is actively creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

Ketan⁤ Kothari, a consultant at ‌Xavier’s Resource Center for the visually Challenged in Mumbai, provides a concrete example. He demonstrates how AI tools now enable him to perform tasks previously inaccessible, including document formatting, participation ⁤in meetings with ⁢live captions, and ⁣generating visual descriptions of images. “AI has turned inventiveness into function,” he explains.

The discussion surrounding this transformative potential was prominently featured at Purple Fest, an event showcasing Indian entrepreneurs and business leaders in the disability space. Tshering Dema, from the UN Advancement Coordination Office, emphasized that this isn’t a localized trend. ⁤ “this is not a single-country story ⁤- it’s a global transition,”⁣ she ⁢stated. “Inclusion isn’t only about laws or infrastructure; it’s about mindset and⁢ shared design. The future of work must be built not just⁢ for people, but with them.”

Ultimately, the promise⁤ of AI lies in its ability ⁤to move beyond simply providing access and ⁤towards fostering genuine agency and contribution ⁣for people with disabilities worldwide.

Costco, Marriott, and Auto Mall Planned for Major Growth Near TSMC in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Major retailers and hospitality brands are slated to join the burgeoning Halo Vista development near the Taiwan ‍semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) facility in north Phoenix. Plans announced this week reveal Costco will occupy roughly 15 acres, with marriott aiming to open hotels encompassing approximately 5 acres,⁤ and space reserved for a potential 12-dealership auto mall.⁢ Infrastructure work is targeted to begin by early next year, preceding the anticipated groundbreaking of Costco and Marriott in the latter half of 2026.

The 2,300-acre Halo Vista ‌project, spearheaded by a partnership including Globe Corporation, is designed to capitalize on the economic boom spurred by⁣ TSMC’s investment in the region. ⁢While the retail and hospitality components represent a relatively small portion of the overall development, project leaders emphasize their importance as “early adopters” for the master plan. Costco intends to open‍ its phoenix location by the end of 2026. Marriott’s combined⁣ hotels are expected to offer around 250 rooms for ‍visitors.

Beyond the announced retailers, Halo Vista also envisions two distinct sub-areas: The ‍Forge,‌ a 12 million square-foot industrial zone, and the sonoran Oasis Science‍ and Technology Park, offering 3.5 million square feet ⁣of flexible office and technology space.

“Kind of small in the grand ⁣scheme of, you know, 2,300 acres, but large in terms of⁤ early impact, early adopters for the master plan,” said developer representative Janson.

Currently, no manufacturers⁢ or dealers have committed to the planned auto mall.

Intel’s Ohio campus remains unfinished 3 years after groundbreaking

by Emma Walker – News Editor September 5, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

New Albany, OH – Three years after groundbreaking, Intel‘s planned $20 billion semiconductor manufacturing campus in Ohio remains unfinished and faces notable delays, raising concerns among local officials. Construction has dramatically slowed, and a newly completed AEP substation currently sits idle, awaiting power demand from the stalled project. The massive development, initially slated to begin production in 2025,is located just outside Johnstown in New Albany and Licking County.Johnstown Mayor Donald Barnard expressed diminished optimism regarding Intel’s commitment to building beyond the originally promised two fabrication plants (fabs). “There’s just a lot of unknown and I feel like Johnstown is left having to answer all the questions,” Barnard said. “The state has literally forgot about us and what they’ve done to us,and yet we get asked all the questions about Intel.”

New Albany Mayor sloan Spalding remains hopeful, acknowledging the original timeline was ambitious for a project of this scale. “I can’t wait to have the ribbon cutting at that facility, and know that through all the blood, sweat, and tears,if you will, that we were able to bring this manufacturing back to the united States,” Spalding stated.

licking County Commissioner Tim Bubb, initially enthusiastic about the project’s progress as farm fields transformed into construction sites, now voices frustration over the lack of fulfillment. While recognizing potential financial considerations for Intel, Bubb said, “The brakes have been tapped. We’re all waiting with bated breath to see what happens.” He anticipates a wait of at least five to six more years before the factories are completed.Intel announced plans for the ohio campus in early 2022, aiming to create thousands of jobs and bolster domestic chip production. The project represents a significant investment in U.S. manufacturing, but its future remains uncertain as the company navigates evolving market conditions and technological advancements.

Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa: U.S. Aid Key to Stability Amid Sectarian Violence

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 5, 2025

Re-Engaging with Syria: A Path Towards Stability and Reconstruction

Syria faces a critical juncture.‍ While a new government has emerged, the ⁤risk of instability – including renewed ethnic tensions and societal fragmentation – remains ‍important. Sustained effort is⁤ needed from Damascus to rebuild the nation and foster unity amongst its people. A key component of this process must be‌ a focus on improving⁢ the daily lives of ordinary Syrians through improved services, reliable utilities, and tangible economic ‍opportunities. The United States⁣ has a⁢ role to play in supporting this transition,⁤ and ⁤should actively seek ways⁢ to expand its assistance.

A crucial first step is the reopening of the U.S. Embassy in Damascus. The work ⁣undertaken by individuals like Barrack on the ground is valuable, but a dedicated ambassador, present in Damascus and engaging with Syria’s diverse ethnic groups,is⁤ essential for effective diplomacy‍ during this sensitive period. An embassy would provide a‍ vital platform for regional stakeholders – including Jordan, Turkey, Saudi⁣ Arabia, and Qatar – to encourage constructive progress within the Syrian government.

Recent changes within the U.S.⁤ government, specifically the elimination of the U.S. Agency for ‌International Growth and the State Department’s Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization⁢ Operations, have presented challenges to U.S.support for Syria’s transition. However, existing tools and⁤ a skilled workforce ⁢remain ⁢available.

The Global Fragility‍ Act (GFA), enacted in ‌2019, offers a⁤ framework for conflict prevention and stabilization in fragile states.Utilizing the authorities outlined in the GFA – contingent upon appropriate funding and the inclusion ⁣of Syria ⁢on the priority country list – the United States could actively support ‍Syrian civil ⁣society. This could include financing for small, medium, and micro enterprises, and bolstering local reconciliation committees responsible for service delivery, reconstruction, and facilitating the voluntary return of displaced‍ persons.Initial GFA ⁤pilot programs in Libya have demonstrated promising results in similar contexts.

Beyond supporting civil society, the U.S. can assist Syria in establishing essential services for its citizens. ‌Providing these services is fundamental⁤ to building government legitimacy. A potential mechanism for rapid implementation is a multidonor trust fund, a⁢ model successfully employed in‌ other regions. The World Bank’s Middle East and North⁣ Africa Multidonor Trust Fund (MDTF), which⁢ concluded its last round in 2021, provides a viable template.

The‌ MDTF could finance critical infrastructure projects in areas like electricity⁤ and housing, while coordinating with reconstruction efforts already underway with support from Turkey⁤ and Gulf states to avoid redundancy. Importantly, as an international program, the MDTF offers a⁣ degree of insulation from shifts in U.S. domestic policy.

The United States has already demonstrated ‌a commitment⁢ to syria’s new government, highlighted by the recent in-person meeting between president Trump and Sharaa in Riyadh,⁣ saudi⁢ Arabia in May. Now ‌is the time to build on this momentum. To achieve a peaceful and ‍unified Syria, the United States ‌must significantly increase its investment – both in diplomatic engagement and financial support.

What the 80th UN General Assembly means for Africa

Africa‘s‍ growth agenda: Harnessing Opportunity and Curbing⁢ Illicit ⁣Flows – Insights from the Foresight Africa Podcast

A recent episode‌ of the Foresight africa podcast, featuring United States ‌Under-Secretary-General (USG) Duarte, highlighted critical perspectives on Africa’s development trajectory and the importance of maximizing opportunities presented by the shifting global landscape. the conversation, hosted by Professor landry Signé, centered on the need for African nations to prioritize their own development agendas, notably in light of the evolving geopolitical climate.

Duarte emphasized the importance of the African union and other regional organizations in navigating this period, ‍noting that opportunities of this magnitude arise infrequently – roughly every 150 years. However, realizing these opportunities requires strengthening governance and ⁢addressing notable financial losses. Duarte specifically cited staggering figures: $70 billion lost through inefficient ⁣public spending, $65 billion due to‍ trade mispricing, and a⁣ total of $500⁣ billion lost annually.

Signé affirmed the connection between strong national states and effective continental organizations, stating that multilateral institutions are only as powerful as their member states.Duarte’s core advice to African and global policymakers was direct: “Stop losing money.” He urged‍ a focus on controlling financial flows and breaking what he termed the “finance paradox” – the contradiction of relying on Official Development Assistance (ODA) while together losing substantial funds‌ through illicit channels. he ⁣argued that Africa cannot sustain its development relying on this model and must prioritize ⁤channeling its own resources into human capital development to build resilient societies.Looking towards the future,Duarte ⁤offered advice to African youth, particularly young women, emphasizing the importance of‌ embracing Information and Communication Technology (ICT)‍ and innovation. He encouraged them to proactively acquire skills through⁣ technology, rather than waiting for state-led initiatives, and to prioritize education in Science,‍ Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

The podcast episode underscores a critical message: Africa’s future success hinges on⁢ strengthening internal governance, curbing illicit financial flows, and empowering its youth with the skills needed to thrive⁢ in a rapidly changing technological world.
