Keto Diet shows Promise as Adjunctive Therapy for Depression, New Study Finds
A new study from Ohio State University (OSU) indicates the ketogenic diet may offer benefits for individuals struggling with depression. Researchers found significant improvements in mood among participants following a keto eating plan-less than 50 grams โof carbohydrates per โขday, combined with higher fat and moderate protein-prior to the โขstudy.
The research team provided “extensive education” to participants, emphasizing eating when hungry and stopping when full, withoutโ calorie tracking. “itโ was very crucialโข to make sure โขparticipants knew what they โฃwere getting themselves โฃinto,” โexplained โDrewโ Decker, a graduateโ student and the study’s first author. The individualized approach focused on tailoring โขdietary suggestions based on participants’ food preferences to โคencourage adherence.
While โthe study lacked โa non-keto control group, researchers wereโข surprised by the “magnitude of improvements” observed. Jeffโฃ Volek, a human sciences professor at OSUโ and lead author,โ noted, “There’s a lot of evidence that ketones improve brain function and can change people’sโค mood through a variety of โdifferent neurochemicals.” He suggested ketones may directly impact neurotransmitters related toโข depression and possess โคanti-inflammatory properties that could contribute to mood enhancement.
Participants in the study โขexperienced an average weightโข loss of 11 pounds and a 2.4% โdecrease in โฃbody fat, with all but โฃoneโ individual losing weight. Volek highlighted a potential connection between weight and mental health, noting that โindividuals who are overweight or obese areโฃ more likely to experience depression.
Volek recommends โconsidering โoption eating patterns for those with mental health disorders, stating, “If you are someone who is suffering from a mental health condition, this isโ another tool in the toolbox that might be worth trying.” He advises seeking guidance from a professional informed inโ the ketogenic diet for support.
