Kaizer Chiefs: Controversial Offside Call Costs PSL Points After Confed Cup Defeat

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor March 3, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Kaze has pointed to a “wrong attitude” following the team’s recent setbacks, including a loss to Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup and subsequent defeats to Stellenbosch and Cape Town Spurs in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). The Amakhosi suffered a 2-1 loss to Stellenbosch, a result marred by controversy over a disallowed goal.

The disputed goal came when Ashley du Preez found the net following a cross from Flavio da Silva. But, the goal was ruled out for offside, a decision that has drawn criticism from former FIFA coach Victor Hlungwani. Hlungwani, speaking to Soccerzone, argued the decision was incorrect, stating, “We are going to draw the line to advise whether the player is [offside]. You can see that Du Preez is in an offside position, but it is not an offence to be in an offside position.”

Hlungwani further clarified his assessment, stating, “Let’s have a look when he [Du Preez] gets a cross. You can see that he’s behind the ball. The goal should have been allowed. It was not given, that’s not right.”

The loss to Zamalek in Group D of the CAF Confederation Cup preceded the PSL defeats, adding to the pressure on the Amakhosi. Kaizer Chiefs FC confirmed they will face opponents in the Confed Cup Group Stages, but details of those matches were not immediately available.

The team was without Aden McCarthy and Inacio Miguel for the Zamalek match, forcing the co-coaches to adjust their approach. The impact of these absences on the team’s performance remains a point of analysis.

Following the CAF setback, Chiefs players reportedly discussed their financial commitments, with one player stating, “We paid our school fees… cash,” according to News24, suggesting a determination to use the league campaign as a means to financial stability.

Chippa United Beat Richards Bay: Kwayiba & Ntsundwana Shine

Chippa United defeated Richards Bay 3-0 at Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Saturday, February 14, 2026, moving further away from the relegation zone in the South African Premiership. Sirgio Kammies opened the scoring for the Chilli Boys in first-half stoppage time, with Somila Ntsundwana and Sinoxolo Kwayiba adding goals in the second half.

The match began slowly, with both teams struggling to establish dominance. Chippa United gradually increased the pressure, attempting to unsettle the Natal Rich Boys in front of a passionate home crowd. Ayabulela Konqobe set up Sinoxolo Kwayiba for an early attempt, but the shot was blocked. Goodman Mosele also tested Richards Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno with a promising effort that was saved.

Kammies received a yellow card during a tightly contested first half, but ultimately had the last say before the break. He scored his first goal of the season in the first minute of added time, giving Chippa a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Richards Bay emerged for the second half with increased urgency, seeking an equaliser. However, Chippa United extended their advantage through Somila Ntsundwana in the 67th minute. Ntsundwana celebrated by removing his shirt, earning a booking from the referee.

Orlando Pirates loanee, Kwayiba, then sealed the victory for Chippa United in the 80th minute, firing into the far corner after intercepting a stray pass. The goal was Kwayiba’s third for the club. The win provides Chippa United with crucial breathing space in their fight to avoid relegation.

Richards Bay made two substitutions in an attempt to change the game, bringing on Thulani Gumede for Wandile Ngema and Luyanda Khumalo for Lindokuhle Zikhali, but were unable to overcome the two-goal deficit.
