UK and US Resume Steel Talks as Trump โขState Visit Looms
WASHINGTON – The United Kingdom and the United โStates have โขrestarted โฃnegotiations regarding steelโค and aluminum tariffs ahead of former President Donald Trump’s state visit, seeking a resolution to trade โคbarriers โฃimpacting the British steel industry. Discussions โฃcenter on easing โrestrictions โimposed by theโข U.S.โ that require metals to be “meltedโ and poured” within their country โขofโ origin to qualify for tariff relief – a condition proving especially โขchallenging for UKโค producers.
The โrenewed talksโข arrive at aโ critical โฃjuncture for Britain’s steel sector,โ already strained by the September closure of Tata Steel UK’s Portโ talbot steel mill, a major โexporter โขto the โคU.S. โขThe outcome ofโ these negotiations will determine the future viability of British steel exports and the associated jobs, with the International Chamber of Commerce UK warningโ of escalating economic damage โand โฃdiminished growth prospects if โฃa solution isn’tโ reached quickly.
Chris โขSouthworth, head of the International Chamberโข of Commerce UK, emphasized the urgency, stating, โ”The longer this goes on, the more uncertain it is, the more damaging it is, the less likely we areโค going to getโ growth, โคand the more threat โthere โฃis toโข the jobs that are associated.”โค
U.S. โregulations currently mandate theโ “melt and pour” process for tariff exemptions, a โฃrequirement challenging for theโค UK to meetโค following the Port Talbot mill’s โshutdown. Southworth added there is “a great possibility” to finalize an agreement during the state visit, stressing, “We need a solution quickly.”
