Venezuela Deploys 15,000 Troops to Colombian border Amidst Guerrilla Concerns & Drug Seizure Efforts
CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuela is significantly bolstering โits military presence โalong its border with Colombia, deploying 15,000 troops in a move officials say is designed to combat crime and ensure security. Theโ deployment, announced by Diosdado Cabello, a high-ranking Venezuelan official, โฃcomes after Colombian President Gustavo Petro requested the Venezuelan government addressโข the presenceโ of armedโค groups operating near โคthe border – specifically, the โSecond Marquetalia (dissidents of the Revolutionaryโ Armed โForces of Colombia) and the National โLiberation Army.Cabello detailed the reinforcement willโ include โฃtroops, air support, river patrol vessels, and drones, aiming to “evict” individuals attempting to establish a footholdโข on the border for criminal activities. “The deployment of 15,000 men andโ women will begin instantly and will extend toโ the limit with Tรกchira,”โฃ Cabello stated. “We ask the Colombian โgovernmentโ to do the sameโข to ensure peace throughoutโ the border axis.”
The operation, dubbed “Catatumbo Lightning,” isโข also linked to โคthe activation of “Peaceโ Zone No. 1.” Cabello โฃhighlighted the โคcreation of rapid response units (UROS) throughout the country, equipped withโ personnel, aircraft, and ships, and under the operationalโข control โof the CEOFANB (Bolivarian national โArmedโ Forces). “It is an efficient combat unit to respond โquickly โto anyโ eventuality,” he assured.
Alongside the troop deployment,Venezuelan authorities reported notable success in anti-drug operations. Through August of this year, they have seized 52,769 kilograms (over 52 tons) of drugsโ and 153,000 kilograms of โchemical precursorsโข used in narcotics โขproduction. Moreover, over 480 rifles, short โandโค long weapons, loaders, and cartridges โขhave been confiscated, many reportedly abandoned in dismantled criminal camps in the states of Zulia, Tรกchira, Falcรณn, and Delta โคAmacuro.
Cabello alsoโฃ reported the destruction of 400 aircraft, 92 clandestineโ airstrips,โฃ 28 logistics structures, 5โค semi-submersible vessels, and 80 high-powered engines used โfor illicit trafficking. “Here we combat the root โขof the drug problem,โ not just the symptoms,” he โemphasized.
