Bloom Ranch and Doctors Advocate Lifestyle Changes to Combat Chronic Illness in Black Californians
Los Angeles, CA – A growing number of โขCalifornia doctors are embracing a proactive approach to healthcare, prescribing lifestyle changes -โฃ including increased consumption of fresh produce and peer support – to combat chronic diseases disproportionately impactingโ the Black community. Initiatives like Bloom Ranch, founded โin 1998 by Alina Anderson,โค are gaining traction as vital components of preventative care.
Chronic illnesses โคrepresent a important health โcrisis in โCalifornia, particularly within underserved Blackโค communities.Recognizing the limitations of customary medicalโข interventions, physicians are increasingly โturning to holistic strategies that empower patients to take control of their wellbeing. “Allโข of us have families that could use this information,” Anderson stated,โฃ highlightingโ the broad relevance of accessible preventative resources.
A recent โฃstudy by the California Chronic Care Coalition underscores the effectiveness of peer-to-peer support programs, which utilize self-management training led by individuals living with chronic conditions to provide role models and support. “The unifying feature of โthese programs is that they seekโ to build onโ the strengths, knowledge, and experience that peers โcan offer,” the report states.โ
Liz Helms, CEO of the California Chronic Care Coalition, emphasized theโ urgent need for improved access to preventative care, particularly in underserved areas. “It’s in horrible shape. It needs to get so much โฃbetter, โespecially in โunderserved areas, whereโค the Black population has a whole set of different needs,” she said. helms, who โbegan her advocacy โคwork after facing denial of care in the early 1990s, also lauded the expansion of telehealth as a โฃmeans to overcome barriers to access, such as transportation and distance.
Addressing a critical โbarrier to care, Helms stressed the importance ofโข overcoming fear and advocating for โขoneself. “I had toโฃ get over my fear of going to the doctor, of not โspeaking up,” she shared, urging patients to “understand the baseline” of their health โand to โขresist stigmatization.”Everyone has a right to good, quality, โaffordable, timely health care,” she asserted.
