Students Stage Walkouts,Protests at โฃUP Diliman and Manila Over Flood Control ‘Corruption‘
MANILA,Philippines – โฃstudent protests erupted at the University of the Philippines’โข Diliman and Manila campuses onโ Friday,as students walked outโ of โclasses โคand marched to demand โaccountability regarding alleged anomalies in flood control projects. The โขdemonstrations coincided with nationwide “Black โFriday” protests.
Protesters atโ both campusesโค called for accountability in the flood control controversy and increased funding for state education. In a striking display of dissent, students threw mud at tarpaulins bearing the images of former Departmentโ of Publicโฃ Works and โฃHighways โข(DPWH) secretary Manuel Bonoan andโฃ President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
President Marcos Jr. recently formed an independent commission to investigateโข the flood control anomalies.

The University of the Philippines issued โคa statement expressing its support for the protests,stating the issue of corruption in flood control โprojects is โคa matter of “gravest concern.” UP President Angelo “Jijil” Jimenez โstated, โ”The University viewsโ with gravest concern the revelation of deep-seated and massive corruption plaguing the flood control projects in the country. We cannot stayโฃ neutral.”
The Philippine โขNationalโข Policeโ (PNP) stated โขit โขwas “fully prepared“โฃ for the black Friday protests, deploying over 2,000 police officers. โขPNP acting โขchief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatezโข Jr. indicated security plans were in place โshould protests escalate to major government establishments, similar to recent events in Nepal and Indonesia.
