Montreal Port Expands Capacity with New contrecoeur Terminal Project
The โPort ofโ Montreal is poised for significant growth with the development of a new containerโ terminal in Contrecoeur, approximately 50 miles north of the city on the st.โข Lawrenceโ River. A recent agreement โฃwithโ DPโ World Canada marks a key milestone in the project,โค which has been in โขplanning โขsinceโฃ the โ1980s when the Montreal Port Authority began acquiring land โin the area.
This partnership will see DP World Canada take the led on constructing and โคoperating the land-sideโค infrastructure of the new โฃterminal, including the container yard, buildings, utilities, โand vital โฃrail connections.โ Aโ 40-year operating agreement will โคfollow the commencement of land work, anticipated in 2027, afterโฃ a โขperiod of collaborative design finalizationโข with theโฃ Port Authority. The expansion is driven byโ theโ increasing โdemandsโฃ on existingโ facilitiesโ on Montreal Island, which processed nearly 1.5โฃ millionโข TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units)โฃ in 2024 and are โคnearingโ full capacity. Theโค Contrecoeur terminalโ is designed to handle 1.15 million TEU annually, representing a nearly 60% increase in the โขPort ofโ Montreal’s overall container handling capabilities.
the terminal will feature two berths alongside dedicated container handling andโ storageโฃ zones. โ Improvements to regionalโข logistics are also a priority, with integrated roadโข and rail connections โplanned for the Contrecoeur site. Construction will utilize a hybrid approach, with the Port of Montreal and the โCanadian Coast Guard managing the water-side aspects, while DP Worldโค focuses on the land-side development.โข
Site preparation is slated to begin thisโข year, pending final approvals, with โขin-water work โฃscheduled for 2026.The project is expected to be fully commissioned in 2030. This venture represents โDP World Canada’s first investment in the Port of Montreal,โ adding to its existingโ portfolio of six canadianโค port facilities located in โVancouver, Prince Rupert,โข Fraser surrey, Nanaimo, and Saint John.
