stock market Today: Liveโข Updates – Friday Sell-Off Erases Weekly Gains
New York – Stocks closed sharply lower Friday, reversing earlier gains as escalating trade tensionsโข with China and the ongoing U.S.โข governmentโ shutdown fueledโ investor anxiety. โThe declines wiped out โฃthe S&P โ500’s โweekly advance, putting the benchmark index on track for โฃaโ 1% loss for the period.
Tech stocks, particularly those with ample exposureโข to the Chinese market, led the sell-off. Nvidia fell more โthan 1%, advanced Micro Devices (AMD) dropped over 5%, โคandโข Tesla shed almost 3%.
“It’s not surprising to see technology related โคstocks down the most today as they have notable exposure to Chinaโฃ in both manufacturing and as a largeโค customer,” Art Hogan, โchief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth, told CNBC.”Clearly, our relationship with the second largest economy in the world just got more difficult.”
Theโค market downturn coincided withโฃ the 10th day ofโข a partial โขU.S.government shutdown. The Senate failed forโฃ aโ seventh โtime onโ Thursday to pass stop-gap funding proposals, and negotiations between โRepublicans and Democrats remain stalled.
The โขDow Jones Industrial โAverage also closed lower.A CNBC chart tracking the Dow’sโข intradayโ performance is available here.
