Point Chevalier Welcomes New World Supermarket, Transforming Former Industrial Site
Point Chevalier, Auckland, is now home to a new state-of-the-art New World supermarket, officially opening its doors after a period of construction. The supermarket is expected to serve tens of thousands of shoppers each week, significantly increasing retail options in the suburb, which previously had limited grocery access with only a smaller Woolworths store.
Foodstuffs New Zealand, the company behind New World, has expressed enthusiasm about joining the Point Chevalier community. According to their website, the focus extends beyond simply opening a store; they aim to integrate into the local area and build relationships with residents.
The new supermarket is located on a site formerly occupied by a long-abandoned tire and vehicle lot, characterized by derelict buildings and rusty security fencing. The change of this 1.7-hectare site at 29-39 Great North Road represents a significant redevelopment of a previously underutilized area. The project, managed by Naylor Love Construction, began in late 2022 with a budget of approximately $60 million.
The development includes not only the 4,500 square metre supermarket but also provisions for future retail spaces and potential community facilities. Local residents had previously expressed concerns regarding traffic congestion and the impact on existing businesses, prompting Foodstuffs to engage in community consultation throughout the planning and construction phases.
Foodstuffs New Zealand has been contacted for further comment regarding the supermarket’s opening and its long-term plans for the Point Chevalier location.
