Fox News Interrupts programming for Trump‘sโข Call to End Senate Filibuster
Fox News interrupted its regular schedule on Novemberโ 5th โto broadcastโข remarks from โฃformerโ President Donald โขTrump, who issued a strong โcall to eliminate the Senate filibuster amidst a potential government shutdown.Trump warned that without ending the practise, the Republican party woudl beโข unable to pass legislation duringโ the remaining three โคyears of the current presidential term.
The filibuster, a Senate tradition allowing for unlimitedโ debate to delayโ orโค block โvotes, currentlyโ requiresโข a 60-voteโ supermajority to overcome through a process called cloture. This threshold presents a challenge for Republicans, who hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, necessitatingโค support โfrom at least โseven Democrats to pass legislation, including funding bills to avert a government shutdown.
Trump’s โขcomments followed โrecent Democratic victories in several key races, including gubernatorial winsโ in New Jersey and Virginia, and a mayoral election โin New York. He also voiced support for former New York Governor andrew Cuomo’sโข independent mayoral โขbid. Additionally, a California ballot measure passed that coudl โperhaps allow Democrats to gain additional seats in the 2026 midterm elections.
The former President has also taken to โขhis Truth Social platform to urge senators to abolish the โค60-voteโ requirement.
The filibuster itself is not enshrined in the USโ Constitution, nor wasโฃ itโฃ established by a โspecific law.The Constitution grants the Senate the authority to โset its own โคinternal rules. Historically, senators could utilize filibusters to obstruct proceedings. The cloture process, initially requiring a two-thirds supermajority inโค 1917,โข was later reduced toโข three-fifths ofโข all senators – the current 60-vote threshold – in 1975. Trump arguesโ that eliminating thisโ requirement โฃis the “only way” to ensure โlegislative progress.
