Mortgage Fraud: Incentives, Tax Benefits & Detection

trump ‌Accuses Fed’s ⁣Lisa Cook of Mortgage ‍Fraud, But ⁤Proving Intent Is a ⁤High Bar

WASHINGTON ⁤- Former President Donald Trump⁢ has⁢ accused Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook of mortgage fraud, allegations that highlight the difficulty of prosecuting such cases even when discrepancies exist in property ownership ⁢records. The ‍accusations centre‌ on ‍Cook’s designation of a property as ‌her primary residence.

According to public records, cook listed a ‍property⁣ in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as ⁤her primary residence ⁢while concurrently holding‍ a mortgage on a separate property in Washington, D.C. This raised questions about whether⁤ she misrepresented ‌her⁣ primary residence to secure a more favorable mortgage rate. ‌Typically, a primary residence is defined as the place where an⁢ owner⁤ spends⁣ most of their‌ time,‍ votes,‍ files tax returns, and receives mail, explained mortgage fraud ⁢expert Campo.

A 2023 report by the ‌Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia ⁢identified over 22,000 instances of⁤ “fraudulent borrowers” ‍misrepresenting owner-occupancy status between 2005 and 2017,⁢ based on⁣ a sample of over⁤ 15 million loans. The report found these borrowers ⁤tended to take out larger loans and had higher mortgage default rates.⁢ However, the authors ⁣noted⁣ that such fraud is often “difficult to detect until long after the mortgage has been originated.”

“There is a difference between the⁢ court of law and the court of public opinion,” said Jonathan edges,a law professor at Washington University in‍ St. Louis and former‌ Assistant Attorney General, in a⁣ recent CNBC interview. “In the court of law, this is small ball ⁣and very difficult to prove.” ⁣He‌ elaborated that prosecutors ‍would need to⁢ demonstrate not onyl an inaccurate ⁤form submission but also “the specific⁢ intent to deceive, to defraud banks, as opposed to just making‍ a mistake.”

Federal sentencing data⁤ shows ‍38 mortgage fraud ⁣offenders⁤ were ⁢sentenced⁣ in ⁣fiscal year 2024, a⁤ slight increase from 34 in ⁤2023, but considerably ⁢down from 426 in 2015. The U.S. Sentencing commission data⁤ does not categorize the‍ specific types of mortgage⁤ fraud.

Trump Signals Major Sanctions on Russia and China Over Ukraine War

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 14, 2025

Trump Urges NATO Allies to Impose Stricter ‌Sanctions on russia

WASHINGTON⁣ – ‌Former President Donald ‌Trump is ‌calling on NATO nations to implement more stringent sanctions against Russia, ‍echoing concerns that insufficient action⁤ by some allies weakens international leverage over Moscow‍ amid ⁤its ongoing invasion ⁢of Ukraine. Trump made the appeal Saturday ⁤in a post on his social media platform, criticizing what he described ⁤as a less-than-full commitment from NATO adn ‍the continued purchase of Russian‍ oil by certain member states.

“NATO’S‍ commitment to ‌WIN has been far less‍ than 100%, and the purchase of Russian Oil,‌ by some, has been shocking!” Trump wrote. “It greatly weakens yoru negotiating position,‌ and bargaining power, over Russia.”

The ⁤former⁤ president has repeatedly threatened sanctions against Russia but has so far refrained from imposing them, ‍a stance some analysts attribute to a desire ⁣to potentially broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. Concerns ‍also exist that a decisively ‍defeated Russia could deepen its alliance with China, bolstering Beijing’s global influence.

Trump’s call for ⁢broader sanctions comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ‍urges allies to avoid “excuses” and increase economic pressure on Russia.”It is necesary to reduce the consumption⁢ of Russian oil, and this will definitely reduce ⁣Russia’s ability to fight,” Zelenskyy wrote on X Saturday.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris⁣ wright echoed this sentiment Friday, stating, “We want ‍to displace all ⁤Russian gas…we want to end the Russian-Ukraine war.” Wright specifically‌ called on Hungary and ‌Slovakia to⁣ cease purchasing Russian fossil ‌fuels, which have‌ drawn criticism from Trump administration officials.

Scott ⁢Betting, a‌ financial ⁣expert, praised Trump’s push for⁤ unified sanctions, stating, “Onyl with a unified effort that cuts off the revenues funding Putin’s war machine at the source⁤ will we be able to apply sufficient economic‌ pressure‌ to end the senseless killing.”

Earlier this ⁤month, trump indicated he was prepared to move‍ towards a “second ‌phase” of‍ sanctions against Russia but has yet to implement further levies. The situation ⁢remains fluid as international efforts to address the conflict continue.

Paramount Skydance Weighing Bid for Warner Bros.⁣ Discovery

Paramount Skydance is preparing a bid for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), according to sources familiar with the matter. the potential move comes as the media landscape ‍continues to consolidate, ‌with companies seeking scale to compete in the streaming‌ era.

Comcast announced in November 2024 that its NBCUniversal would spin off its pay TV networks, including CNBC adn MSNBC, into a separate, publicly traded entity, a strategy WBD afterward mirrored.

Paramount⁣ Skydance itself is the result of an $8 billion merger ‌finalized in August 2025 after a lengthy regulatory review by the Federal Communications Commission ⁢(FCC). The FCC’s ‌approval followed‍ Paramount’s ‍agreement to pay $16 million to Donald Trump to settle a⁣ lawsuit over a “60 Minutes” interview with ⁤Kamala Harris. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr stated upon approval that he welcomed “Skydance’s commitment to make critically important changes at the once storied CBS broadcast network.”

The company, led by David Ellison, son of Oracle founder and multibillionaire Larry Ellison, is currently focused on cutting over $2 billion in costs,⁣ with further layoffs anticipated. Last week, Paramount Skydance mandated employees return to the office five‍ days a week or seek a buyout.

Sence the merger backed by RedBird Capital Partners, Paramount Skydance has pursued ‌several deals, including acquiring the‌ U.S. rights to UFC for seven years beginning in 2026. On september 10, ⁣2025, Larry Ellison’s wealth increased by ⁢over⁣ $100 billion following strong growth projections from Oracle.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and CNBC.

Title: 47% of U.S. Businesses Redirect China Investments Amid Trade Tensions

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 10, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Shanghai, China – A record share of U.S.⁣ businesses are diverting⁢ or planning to divert investments out of China, ⁤according to a new ⁤survey released Monday by teh American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (AmCham ‍Shanghai). The annual China ‍Business Climate Survey reveals that 24% of ⁢companies have ⁣shifted or are considering shifting investments to choice locations, marking a significant increase from 19% in⁢ 2023.

This shift comes despite reported improvements in China’s regulatory‌ environment and ongoing efforts by Beijing to attract⁢ foreign capital. While nearly half (48%) of businesses now perceive the regulatory landscape as clear ‌- a jump from 35% in 2024 – concerns remain, particularly within the technology sector.‍ The trend underscores growing geopolitical tensions and evolving ⁣global supply⁣ chains, possibly impacting China’s economic growth and foreign investment inflows.

The survey,⁤ conducted in January, polled 381 member companies. It found a notable improvement in perceptions of regulatory clarity, with the share of businesses citing a lack of transparency ‌as hindering operations falling by 12 percentage⁢ points to 16%. Additionally, 37% of respondents indicated that foreign and local companies are treated equally, a ‍5 percentage point increase.beijing has recently intensified it’s⁤ efforts‌ to ‍woo foreign investment, unveiling an “action plan” earlier this ⁣year aimed at easing investment in sectors like biotechnology and clarifying government ⁢procurement standards. However, the AmCham Shanghai‌ data reveals that 14% of respondents still report a worsening business ‍environment in China, with the tech industry experiencing the most significant challenges, cited by 31% of‍ respondents in that sector.

Cracker Barrel Rebranding Backlash: Remodels Halted

Cracker Barrel Halts Restaurant Remodels Following Customer Backlash ‍Over ⁤Rebranding

Cracker Barrel announced Tuesday it is indeed suspending all restaurant remodels, the latest development in ⁣the controversy surrounding its recent rebranding efforts. The ⁣decision comes after the company faced meaningful criticism for a new ⁤logo unveiled in late August, which eliminated its “Uncle Herschel” character and the “Old country Store” wording in favor of a more modern aesthetic.

The logo change sparked a widespread backlash on social media, even drawing a rebuke from president Donald Trump, who called it “a mistake” on his Truth Social platform.

Alongside the logo rebrand, Cracker Barrel had ⁢been testing ⁢a more modern restaurant layout in four of its 660 locations.⁤ Though, the company stated that customer feedback‍ prompted a complete halt to the remodel process.

“We heard clearly ⁤that the modern remodel design does not reflect what you love about Cracker ⁤Barrel,” the ‌company saeid in a statement. “The ‍vintage‍ Americana you love will always be ‌here – the rocking chairs on the ⁢porch, our fireplaces ⁤and peg games, unique treasures ⁢in our gift shop and antiques pulled straight from our warehouse in Lebanon, Tennessee.”

The rebranding initiative stemmed from a “strategic transformation plan” unveiled in⁣ 2024, which aimed to “evolve the store and guest experience.” The original plan included remodeling⁣ 25 ⁣to⁢ 30 stores in fiscal 2025.

Following ‍the declaration of the logo’s⁣ return to its original design on August 27, ⁤Cracker Barrel’s ⁣shares rose more than 8% in‌ a single day. The company affirmed its continued ‌investment in restaurant maintenance to meet customer expectations.

Hyundai Immigration Raid: Impact on U.S. Businesses and Investment

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 9, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Hyundai Raid⁣ Signals Shift in US Expectations for Foreign Investment

Recent immigration raids at ⁢a ‍Hyundai Motor Group facility in Georgia are prompting a re-evaluation of how ⁤foreign automotive‍ companies operate⁣ in the U.S., with ‍the Biden administration emphasizing the need for American worker training and hiring. The raids, ‌which⁢ focused on verifying work authorization, have raised concerns about compliance with U.S. labor laws and sparked ⁣debate about the balance between attracting foreign investment and protecting American jobs.

According to White House National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard,‍ the administration welcomes foreign investment, “especially when⁣ they’re creating‌ very niche ⁤products ⁤like chips, or in this case, like batteries,” but expects these companies to prioritize American workers. Brainard stated the President expects foreign companies to hire ⁣American workers and facilitate knowledge transfer between American and foreign employees through training programs.

the issue stems from a common practise among automotive companies ⁤of replicating successful operational models from their home countries in their U.S. facilities. AlixPartners Partner and⁣ Managing director Arun Kumar explained that foreign companies often rely on workers from their own countries due to their specialized‍ training, as was likely the case at⁣ the Hyundai plant‍ focused on electric vehicle ⁣technology.

Kumar warned that continued reliance on this approach could have “huge implications,‌ especially when you’re stopping‌ production,” and urged auto companies to proactively rethink their strategies. ‍He described the Hyundai raid as “a wakeup call” for the industry, prompting companies to assess their ⁢operations for compliance with U.S. laws. He categorized companies as either unaware of potential issues or ‌knowingly delaying addressing them.

The administration’s focus is further‍ intensifying scrutiny. Kumar believes the automotive industry will adapt, noting ‌the issue is⁣ “solvable.”

However, Case Western University economics professor Susan Helper ⁢cautioned that the raid could have a‍ “chilling effect” ⁣on foreign investment. She also highlighted the administration’s approach, characterized by “not a lot of premium placed on consistent policy,”‌ sends a clear message to foreign companies to prioritize hiring ‌and training ‌American workers. The raid occurred shortly ‌after a summit between President Trump and south Korean President Lee jae Myung, during which South Korean⁣ firms⁤ pledged‍ $150 billion in U.S. investments. While the South Korean ‍government expressed “concern and regret” ⁣to the U.S. Embassy, ⁤Trump stated the incident did not damage ‍relations. The South Korean government is currently working to⁢ facilitate the return‍ of its nationals.

Despite the potential for friction, Helper emphasized a bipartisan desire to revitalize U.S.manufacturing, acknowledging the need for⁤ foreign investment to address ‌gaps⁢ in ⁢domestic expertise. However, she stressed that ⁤such investment must adhere to U.S. regulations.
