Millions in Medical Debt Remain Unclaimed in โIndiana, Nonprofit Aims to Help
INDIANAPOLIS – A significant amount of financial assistance available to Indiana residents strugglingโค with medical billsโ is going untapped, leaving manny Hoosiers burdenedโฃ with debtโข they may not haveโ to pay. Nonprofit organization Dollar For is working to connect eligible patients with hospital financial assistance programs, also known as Charity Care.
Despite every nonprofit hospital being required to offer assistance asโ a condition of their tax-exempt status,a recent โฃ2023 surveyโ revealed only 29% of eligible patients โขactually utilize these programs. Dollar For aims โขto drastically increase that โnumber, having already erased over $1.5 โฃmillion in medical โขdebt โคfor Indianapolis residents alone.
“We help make the bills go away,” explained Eli Rushbanks, Policy Director for Dollar for. The organization guides patients throughโฃ the โขoften-complex submission processes andโ advocatesโค onโค their behalf.
The need isโค clear.โ Stories like Tiffanie Embry’s highlight the financial โคdevastationโค medical emergenciesโข can cause. Embry faced over $20,000 โฃin bills after a car accident where she sustained serious injuries. “Somebody ran into me, right on top โof my car and it hit me. โSeat belt almost cut me in half,” โEmbry recounted. “The officers had toโฃ get me out of the car.”
many, like 24-year-old Shaq Abiola, โavoidโค seeking necessary medical care dueโข to financial concerns. “In college, if anything โhappenedโฆ it was โขjust a hope and a prayer,”โค Abiola said. “There โshoudlโ be more clarity inโฃ billing. Sometimes you go in for a surgery โand โyouโ don’t knowโฃ how much you’re going to pay.”
Dollar Forโ offers a free online screeningโ tool where individuals can answer โfive questions to determine their potential eligibility for assistance. Those who โqualify are then directed to anโ intake flow mirroringโข the hospital’s application requirements.
