The aftermath of the Air India AI-171 plane crash in Ahmedabad reveals the immense tragedy, with the identification of most victims through DNA matching. Families are now receiving the remains of their loved ones, as the community grapples with this heartbreaking loss.
Identification and Handover of Remains
Authorities have matched 215 DNA samples following the devastating plane crash that claimed 241 lives out of 242 on board. Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, confirmed that the remains of 198 deceased individuals have been given to their families. Among the victims, 149 were Indian nationals, seven were Portuguese, 32 were British, and one was Canadian.

The bodies of 183 victims were transported via ambulance. The remaining 15 were sent by air. According to the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik, 222 of the crash victims have been identified; 214 through DNA, and eight by other means.

Survivor’s Farewell and Flight Details
The sole survivor of the crash, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national, recently paid his respects to his brother, Ajay, whose remains were identified via DNA. Vishwash, who was seated in seat 11A of the flight, performed his brother’s last rites with family members on Wednesday morning.
The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, bound for London, departed from Gujarat’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. Shortly after takeoff, the plane crashed into a hostel complex associated with BJ Medical College.
