Seoul, South Korea – South Korea has ceased its anti-North Korea propaganda broadcasts along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a move intended to de-escalate tensions, but immediately followed by reports of unusual and disturbing vocalizations emanating from the North Korean side of the border. Residents near the border reported hearing “strange and unsettling voices” the day after the South Korean loudspeakers fell silent.

“Starting today, the military has begun to remove the loudspeaker,” South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Lee Kyung Ho announced on Monday, April 8th. “This is a practical step that aims to help relieve tension with North Korea, as long as the action does not endanger military readiness.”

Lee confirmed that all loudspeakers along the 248-kilometer (154-mile) long border would be dismantled by the end of the week, but declined to specify the exact number of units removed. The loudspeakers, capable of broadcasting news, music, and political messages, have been a fixture of the inter-Korean border since the Korean War armistice in 1953.

The use of loudspeakers has been a consistent source of friction between North and South Korea. North Korea considers the broadcasts an act of psychological warfare and has repeatedly demanded their cessation. Previous periods of loudspeaker silence have often been followed by renewed broadcasts in response to North Korean provocations.

South Korea resumed the broadcasts in late 2023 following a series of incidents involving North Korea sending balloons carrying trash and propaganda leaflets southward. These balloons,some containing perhaps hazardous materials,prompted Seoul to view the broadcasts as a necessary countermeasure. The broadcasts were initially suspended in September 2023 during a brief period of inter-Korean dialog, but reinstated after the balloon launches resumed.

The loudspeakers are strategically positioned near the Joint Security Area (JSA) in Panmunjom and other key locations along the DMZ. They are capable of reaching a significant portion of the North Korean population living near the border.

President Lee Jae Myung ordered the halt to the broadcasts as part of a broader effort to “restore trust” and improve relations with North Korea, despite the increasingly strained geopolitical landscape. The relationship between the two Koreas is currently at a low point, exacerbated by north Korea’s growing alignment with Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has reportedly provided Pyongyang with economic and military assistance.

President Lee has pledged to pursue negotiations with north Korea without preconditions, a departure from the more hardline stance of his predecessor, Yoon Suk yeol. However, North Korea has shown little interest in dialogue. Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong un and a key political figure, dismissed President Lee’s overtures last week, stating, “If the skirt (the Republic of Korea) … hopes to reverse all the results that have been achieved only with a few sentimental words, there are no more serious calculation errors than that.”
