Trump-Kim Talks Could Yield Nuclear Freeze, Expert Argues
WASHINGTON – A renewed dialog between former President โDonald Trump and northโ Korean leader Kim Jong Un could beโ a pivotal step โฃtowards halting the expansionโฃ of Pyongyang‘s nuclear โarsenal, according to a new analysis by national securityโ expert Joseph Detrani. Published in The โWashington Times, the assessment suggests a โคphased approach – focusing initially on freezing nuclear advancement rather than immediate denuclearization -โค could yield significantโค security benefitsโ for theโ U.S. andโ its allies.
The shift โin North Korea’s โgeopolitical standing, bolstered by strengthening ties with Russia and China,โฃ has fundamentally altered โthe landscape of internationalโ pressure, Detrani argues. With two of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council now aligned with North Korea, theโ efficacy of UN โsanctions is increasinglyโ questionable. Recent appearances alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian โขPresident Vladimir Putin โขat the โฃBeijing parade commemorating the end of Worldโฃ War Twoโ have demonstrablyโ increased Kim Jongโค Un’s “international credibility,” particularly withinโ the Global South.
“We areโข nowโ dealing with a different North Korea,” โDetrani writes. “Mr. Kim is more self-confidentโฆHaving two of the five permanent members of the United Nations Securityโ Council ensures that North Korea no longer must โbe โconcerned with UN sanctions.”
Theโค analysis proposes a series of meetings โbetween โขTrump and Kim could lead to a North Korean commitment to halt โขthe production of fissile material for nuclear weapons, suspend further nuclear โtests, โคand enact a moratorium on ballistic missile launches. Such anโข outcome would โคbe considered a โmajor diplomatic win for the U.S. and would โขlikely de-escalateโ tensions with South Korea and japan.
While complete and verifiable denuclearization remains the “eventual” โคU.S. goal, โฃDetrani advocates โขfor a pragmatic โค”action-for-action” โprocess. This would involve a reciprocal approach: as โฃNorth Korea demonstrates verifiable restraint inโ its nuclear and missile programs, the U.S. could respond by lifting sanctions imposed afterโค 2016, offeringโข security assurances, providing economic development assistance, and exploring the establishment of liaison offices in bothโข countries. The expert also suggestsโข encouraging North โKorea to rejoin the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons โ(NPT).
“Mr. Trump enteringโ talks with Mr. Kim could develop into a relationship with north Korea that could proveโข beneficial for the U.S.and โitsโ allies and partners,” Detrani concludes.
