Santaโ fe christian Upsets Steele Canyon to Claim CIF Division 2 football championship
CHULA VISTA, CA – NOVEMBER 28, 2025 – In a stunning display of resilience, Santa Fe Christian High School defeated Steele Canyon High School 44-41 to capture the CIF San Diego section โขDivision 2 football championship Friday at โคSouthwestern College. The Eagles, aโ school with an enrollment of approximately 400 students, overcame aโ meaningful size disparity to topple the Cougars, a 2,500-student institution, in a โhigh-scoring contest that featured 104 plays.
The victory marks Santa Fe Christian’s first CIF championship in โfootball, solidifying a remarkable season for the program and providing a memorable moment for the small, โprivate school community. The win underscores the potential for smaller schools to compete at a high level โขthrough strategic play and unwavering โขdetermination, and sets the stage forโข the Eagles’ continued success as they look toward future seasons.
Santa Fe Christian’s offense proved unstoppable, led by junior quarterback Labrum, who completed โ21 of 33 passesโฃ for 286 yards and tossed four touchdowns. โWide โreceiver Woolley was labrum’s favorite target, hauling in six receptionsโ for 89 yards, while Campbellโฃ contributed five โขcatches โfor 97 yards. Though the passing game dominated, the Eagles also managed 120 โrushing yards on 23 carries, with Labrum’s teammate, Labrum, leading the ground attack with 27 yards on five attempts.
“We’re a high school with 400โค kids; that is a 2,500-kid high school,” Woolley said. “That was David and Goliath. We’re David and fight hard.”
Steele Canyon’s offense also showcased its firepower, with Caha โconnecting with Henton for an โ80-yard touchdown and Stocker for a 38-yard score. Lopez added twoโ rushing touchdowns for the Cougars, but ultimately, Santa Fe Christian’s balanced attackโฃ and clutch field goalsโ by Scott proved too much to overcome. Scott converted four field goals, from 21, 37, 43, and 43 yards.
The game remained tightly contested throughout, with both teams trading scores. A kickoff return for a โขtouchdown by Steele Canyon’s Jara briefly swung momentum, but Santa Fe Christian responded with consistent โคoffensive drives and a strong defensive effort that forced no turnovers.
“He’s pretty good, huh?” Wallace remarked about Labrum. “And he’s only โขa junior.”
