joรฃo Almeida wins Stage โข13 of Vuelta a Espaรฑa โon Angliru, โMoves to Second โฃOverall
Cabezรณon de la Sal, Spain – โ Joรฃoโข Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) delivered a stunning performance to win Stage 13โฃ of the Vuelta a โคEspaรฑa atop theโฃ formidableโฃ Angliru โclimb, closing the โขgap โto race leader Jonas Vingegaard to โข46 seconds. The 202.7km stage, originating from Cabezรณon de la โขSal, featured a challenging route including the โAlto โde la Mozqueta andโค the Aldo del Cordal before culminating in the punishingโ ascent of the Angliru.
Almeida’s victory marks โขa โnotableโค shift in the general classification (GC), as he โjumped from eighth toโ fourth now justโ three minutes behind Vingegaard. The Portuguese rider’s attackโ inside the finalโข 6kmโ proved decisive, distancing Sepp Kuss โandโค Jai Hindley before ultimately winningโ a sprint finish against Vingegaard.
An early 24-rider breakaway, containing Antonio Tiberiโ (Bahrain-Victorious) and points leader Mads Pedersen, established aโ lead of twoโ and a half minutes within the first 30 kilometers. Nico Vinokurov (XDS Astana) โคand Bob Jungels (Ineos โขGrenadiers) later emerged as frontrunnersโ from the breakaway, โขeventually joined by Jefferson Cepeda (Movistar Team).
The breakaway’s progress was โbriefly interrupted by a โprotest with 12.3km remaining, momentarily halting the โriders. Almeida’s UAE Team Emirates-XRG team, despite the absence of stage winner juan ayuso, applied significant pressure on the GC contenders during the Angliruโค climb, contributing to difficulties for riders including Egan bernal (Ineos grenadiers) and โTorstein Trรฆenโ (Bahrain-Victorious), who ultimately fell back.
Almeida ultimately caught and passed โคthe last remaining breakaway rider, Jungels, with 5.4km to โgo,โฃ before launching hisโ winning move.
“I still have a lot of time to โmake โup to Jonas. He is looking strong so I think it is going โคto be hard task, but we never give up,” Almeida stated after the stage.
