Sydneyโ Sweeneyโฃ Transforms forโฃ Boxing Biopic ‘Christy,’ Trailer Released
Toronto – Sydney Sweeney delivers aโข striking transformation in Christy, a new โฃbiopic chronicling the life of boxing pioneer Christy Martin,โฃ with the film’s trailer debuting โฃtoday. โคBlackโข Bear, โขwhich co-produced the โDavidโ Michรดd-directed picture, will release it theatrically on November 7.
The film arrives as Sweeney continues a โcareer trajectory marked by bold choices and โฃcritical attention. Christy details Martin’s rise to prominence as one of the โfrist female boxing โstars in theโ late 1980s, becoming the first womanโข in the sport to appear โฃon the cover of Sportsโ Illustrated under the guidance of her trainer-manager and husband, Jim (played by ben Foster). Though, the film explores theโ challenges Martin faced outside the ring, โคincluding struggles with family, identity, and an increasingly hazardous relationship with Jim.
Sweeney underwentโข a โmeaningful physical transformation for the role, gaining 30 pounds to embody Martin’s โฃphysicality. โข”I absolutely loved it,” โขSweeney told Deadline at the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film โคFestival. “Iโ truly felt โChristy’s powerโ as I transformed. โAnd I โฃreally enjoyed being able toโ train and work with incredibleโ boxing coaches and weight trainers and nutritionists that helped me get to the place that โIโ was for Christy.”
theโข cast also includes Merritt Wever,โฃ Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry,โ Jess Gabor, Chadโข Coleman, Bryan Hibbard, โTony Cavalero and Gilbert Cruz. Michรดd co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes, based on a story by Katherine Fugate.โ
Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Teddy โSchwarzman, Brent Stiefel, Justin Lothrop, Michรดd and Sweeney produced theโ film. Executive producers are Foulkes, John Friedberg, Michael Heimler, harrison Huffman, David Levine, Ryan Schwartz, Nick shumaker and Brad Zimmerman. Christy premieredโ in TIFF’s Special Presentationsโข section last week.
