Over-the-Counter Drugs & Alcohol: A Dangerous Mix

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 5, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Common Cold & Pain Relief Meds Pose Serious Risks When Mixed with ⁢Alcohol, Experts Warn

london, UK – Combining over-the-counter⁤ medications with alcohol can be a “recipe for disaster,” health professionals are⁢ cautioning, as seemingly harmless remedies often contain ingredients that interact dangerously with even small amounts of ‌alcohol. ⁣Pharmacists and doctors are highlighting the potential ⁤for severe health consequences,⁢ ranging from liver damage to stomach ulcers, urging individuals to be aware of the risks.

Manny⁤ cold and flu remedies contain ‍a combination of paracetamol, phenylephrine hydrochloride,‍ and guaifenesin.‍ kingston University pharmacist and fellow,Dipar Kadmar, explained: “Even small overdoses,or combining paracetamol with alcohol, can increase the risk of serious harm.” The ⁣danger stems from the liver’s processing of paracetamol, which produces a toxic by-product called NAPQI. While the body normally neutralizes NAPQI,alcohol places ‌extra strain on the ‌liver, allowing the toxin to accumulate and perhaps cause life-threatening damage.

Decongestants like ⁢phenylephrine, commonly found in cold medications, have also come under ‍scrutiny. Experts‍ question their effectiveness, noting that a significant portion of the drug is metabolized in the gut⁢ and liver before reaching the nasal passages. For those experiencing cold symptoms and planning to consume alcohol,⁣ simpler remedies like steam⁣ inhalation or saline nasal sprays are recommended as safer alternatives.

Similarly, anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen, frequently used for backache, period⁢ cramps, headaches, and flu symptoms, carry⁢ risks when combined with alcohol. The NHS ‍advises against taking ibuprofen for more than ten days without medical⁣ advice. Doncaster GP, Dr.⁤ Dean Eggitt, warns that ibuprofen irritates the ⁤stomach lining, increasing the risk of painful stomach ulcers, which can, in severe cases, lead to peritonitis.

Alcohol exacerbates this risk by relaxing the valve that prevents stomach acid from rising, contributing to heartburn, reflux, and ulcers, particularly in ‌heavy users. The combination of regular painkiller use‌ and alcohol consumption can lead to serious complications like peritonitis – an infection of⁤ the stomach⁢ lining that can ‍be fatal if left untreated.

The British Liver Trust further cautions that ⁢consuming as little‍ as two ⁣glasses⁤ of wine daily can cause fat to build up⁤ in the liver, ⁤potentially leading to inflammation and⁤ scarring ⁤(fibrosis) when combined with frequent ibuprofen use. Pharmacists ‍recommend opting for gentler pain relief methods like hot or cold compresses and ‌rest when consuming ⁤alcohol, reserving ⁢ibuprofen for periods of abstinence.

Cushing’s Disease: Mom’s Fight Against Dismissive Doctors & Rare Hormone Disorder

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 5, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Dismissed as Post-Pregnancy Changes, a Woman’s “Moon Face” Led to a Rare Diagnosis

Katelyn’s journey to a⁢ diagnosis ⁢of⁣ Cushing’s disease was marked by frustrating dismissals‌ of her increasingly alarming symptoms. Initially, her concerns – including a noticeable puffiness ‍and redness in her face – were attributed to normal post-pregnancy changes. However, she⁣ persisted, ultimately uncovering a hidden pituitary tumour.

Cushing’s disease is a‌ rare disorder, affecting only one to two people per million each year,‌ meaning many doctors⁢ may ⁣encounter only ⁤one⁣ or two cases throughout⁤ their careers. This rarity ⁣contributes to diagnostic challenges, as symptoms frequently ⁣enough overlap with ‍more common conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome,⁤ menopause, or typical‌ post-pregnancy fluctuations.

“Cushing’s‍ can be arduous to diagnose because many of ⁤teh features-weight gain, mood changes,‍ acne-are so common,” ⁢explains Professor Ashley grossman, an endocrinologist at the University of Oxford. “but when they occur together, and in a⁤ relatively short space of⁣ time, it should‍ raise a red ⁢flag.”

For Katelyn, the delay in ‍diagnosis was deeply ⁣distressing.”The hardest‍ part was watching how everything⁢ kept getting worse and ‌just hoping it would be reversible one day,” ‌she recounts.

Eventually, ⁢a brain scan revealed a 1.5cm tumour ‍on her pituitary gland. Surgeons successfully removed ‍the tumour through a⁢ delicate operation performed via her nasal cavity. While most patients respond well to surgery, some require medication to suppress cortisol production, and in ⁣severe cases,⁤ adrenal ‌gland removal ‌may be necessary.Recovery is frequently⁣ enough a lengthy process, perhaps ⁤taking⁤ months or even years ⁤for cortisol levels to normalize and the body to heal.

Now in recovery, Katelyn is using TikTok to⁢ share ‍her ‌experience, connecting ⁢with thousands who recognize similar symptoms. She emphasizes her role⁣ in advocating for her own⁣ health. “I was the one who connected the dots and pushed for the right tests,” she stated. “A⁤ 1.5cm pituitary tumour absolutely‌ wrecked me.⁤ Nothing will humble ‍you more than living as⁢ a version of yourself ‌you don’t recognise. But this too shall pass-it gets better.”

Katelyn’s videos ‌have prompted hundreds⁢ of messages from individuals concerned about potential Cushing’s symptoms, highlighting a gap in awareness. “It⁤ makes me sad that people have to‍ dig through external‌ sources and fight so hard‍ for answers ⁢when somthing as simple as a blood ⁢test could change⁤ everything,”‍ she saeid.

Experts emphasize the importance‌ of considering⁤ Cushing’s disease‍ in patients presenting with a cluster of characteristic symptoms. Professor Grossman advises, “If you have rapid, unexplained weight gain, thinning skin and bruising, irregular periods and psychological ⁤changes,‍ it ⁤is indeed vital to ask yoru ⁢GP for comprehensive hormone testing. A simple blood or urine test can give the first clue, and early diagnosis makes treatment much more effective.”

Key⁣ symptoms‌ to watch for include rapid weight gain concentrated around the trunk and face, thinning skin, purple stretch marks, easy bruising, excessive hair growth on the face and body, muscle weakness, fatigue, depression, anxiety, high ⁢blood pressure, ⁤and diabetes.Untreated, Cushing’s ⁣disease can be life-threatening.

Driven ⁢by her experience, Katelyn is⁤ dedicated to raising⁢ awareness. “I‍ trusted myself, and that’s⁢ what saved⁤ me,” she says. “For months I was told⁢ it was all in my head. but‌ I knew my ⁤body, and ‍I kept ‍pushing. If my story helps just⁤ one ‌person get diagnosed earlier,it⁣ will have been worth⁤ it.”

‘Gray’s Anatomy‘ Star‌ Camilla ⁢Luddington Reveals hashimoto’s Disease Diagnosis

LOS‍ ANGELES, ⁤October 5, 2025 – Camilla Luddington, known for⁣ her role as ⁤Dr. ⁢Jo‌ Wilson‌ on the ⁤long-running⁤ medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has publicly shared her recent diagnosis of Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition affecting⁢ the thyroid gland. ‍The actress revealed the diagnosis on the August 6 episode of ‌her podcast,‌ explaining it shed light on⁢ years of unexplained fatigue.

Luddington,38,shares daughter Hayden, eight, and son lucas, five, with husband Matthew Alan. she explained to listeners that she had often joked ⁣about being “slothy,” but never considered a medical explanation for her persistent exhaustion.”Long as you’ve been listening to us, you’ve known that I joke about being slothy. Just a little slower. slower, tired, wanna be in bed, love a ⁢nap. It never occurred to me that there ⁢could be a medical reason for ‌that,” she said.

Blood work ultimately led doctors‌ to diagnose her with Hashimoto’s disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. The condition directly impacts the ⁤thyroid gland, according to the Mayo Clinic. Luddington recalled her initial reaction, stating,⁤ “I remember hearing the words ‘autoimmune disease’ and ⁢thinking, ‌’What the f*?’ You know what? I knew something was up.Because even when I was ‍having my blood drawn, the doctor said to me, ‘Is there any,⁢ you know, particular ⁢thing you’re concerned⁣ about?’ And I said, ‘Look, ⁤I’m really f***g tired all the⁣ time.'”

Hashimoto’s disease is a relatively‌ common⁤ autoimmune disorder, affecting an ⁣estimated ⁢1-2% of the population, according to the ⁣National Institute of Environmental Health‌ Sciences. It can cause a⁣ range of symptoms, including fatigue, weight ‍gain, constipation, increased sensitivity to cold, and pale, dry skin.‍ Treatment ⁢typically involves daily medication to replace the thyroid hormone the body is no longer producing.Luddington’s‌ openness about her diagnosis aims‌ to raise awareness ⁤of the condition and⁤ encourage others experiencing similar symptoms to seek medical attention.

Starving Nigerian Boy’s Witch Accusation: Rise in UK Abuse Cases

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor October 4, 2025

Boy Once Deemed‍ Too Malnourished too Save Graduates primary School, ⁤a Beacon of Hope Amidst Rising Faith-based Abuse⁢ Cases

LAGOS, NIGERIA – ‌A heartbreaking image of a severely malnourished toddler, abandoned on the streets due to accusations of witchcraft, has given way to a remarkable⁤ story of survival ‌and triumph. Hope,‍ now 12‌ years old, recently graduated primary school, a milestone celebrated by his caregivers‍ and a testament to his resilience. His story emerges as authorities in the United Kingdom‍ express growing concern over a rise in reported cases of faith-based abuse targeting children.

When anja ringgren loven, ‍a ⁣Danish aid worker, first encountered Hope in 2016,‍ she ⁣believed he⁢ was beyond⁣ saving. “When we got to this little boy, he was smelling ⁢of death. I thought he would ‌die in my arms.We don’t know⁣ how he⁢ pulled through, but he ⁢did,” she explained to The Mirror.

Hope’s abandonment⁣ stemmed from the belief, prevalent⁤ in some communities, that he was possessed or a witch -‌ a tragically common reason for children to be ostracized and left to fend for themselves. Despite his initial condition, Hope not only ⁣survived but ‍thrived under anja and her partner David Emmanuel Umem’s ‍care.

Today, Hope is described as “very autonomous,‍ strong and intelligent” and has formed⁢ a strong network of friends at his orphanage. Though deaf and communicating through writing, he harbors⁤ ambitious ‌dreams for the future, earning him the nickname “Little Picasso”‌ from his teachers due to his⁣ passion for the arts. “I ‍am so proud he⁣ graduated [school] ⁤- and ⁢he was so full⁣ of pride too,” Anja added.

Hope’s success ⁣story ‍stands in stark contrast to the fate of⁤ many other children facing ‍similar accusations.A photograph accompanying the⁣ report shows the devastating reality for those less blessed.

The case⁤ highlights a disturbing trend‍ of faith-based abuse, prompting calls for‌ increased‌ support‌ for social services. the Local Government ⁢Association has described the rising figures of suspected abuse as “deeply worrying,” urging⁢ better funding for council social⁣ services.⁤

“These numbers are deeply worrying, ‌and councils are persistent to act‌ on any signs‍ of abuse,” a spokesperson stated. “The reality ‍is councils receive⁣ around 1,700 referrals to children’s social care ⁤services every day, and continue to face mounting pressures providing support to children and young people. It is vital children’s services‌ are adequately funded⁣ in the Autumn Budget so that ‍councils have the resources to invest ‍in early help and intervention,⁢ to prevent children reaching crisis point.”

Experts emphasize the difficulty in⁤ identifying and addressing these abuses. Professor charlotte Baker, of Lancaster University, explained that abuse linked to faith or belief “occurs across the United⁤ kingdom, frequently enough targeting ⁢children ⁣or vulnerable individuals and‌ may ‍result‌ in physical, emotional, or psychological harm.”‌ She ‌noted that these abuses ⁣can include‌ “spirit possession, ‍witchcraft, ritualistic abuse, and related harmful ⁢practices.”

Leethan ⁣Bartholemow, of the‌ International Network⁤ Against Witchcraft Accusations and Ritual Attacks, underscored the scale⁢ of the problem, stating, “It is indeed much more of ‌a problem ⁤then we recognize that⁢ it‌ is. There is ⁢much more work that needs to be done.”

Hope’s journey serves as a powerful ⁢reminder of the⁢ vulnerability of children facing these harmful beliefs, and the critical need‍ for increased awareness, protection, and support.
