The hidden causes of your bad breath – and EXACTLY how to beat it. Plus how to tell if it’s a sign of a serious lurking health problem, reveals DR PHILIPPA KAYE

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 26, 2025

Bad Breath Beyond Bad Hygiene: Hidden Causes⁢ &‍ How to fix Them, Reveals ⁣Dr. Philippa Kaye

London,UK – Persistent bad ⁤breath,or halitosis,is often dismissed as a simple hygiene issue. Tho, a growing body of evidence, highlighted by Dr.⁢ Philippa Kaye, reveals a surprising range of underlying causes – ‌from common digestive problems to possibly serious medical conditions ‍- and crucially, what you can do about them.

While oral hygiene is paramount, ⁤the source of the odour isn’t always in the mouth. The connection ‌between your stomach ⁢and breath is frequently⁤ enough overlooked. “The mouth and throat connect to the stomach, so anything that causes acid or partially digested food to rise can taint ⁣the breath,” explains Dr.Kaye.

The GERD Connection: A⁤ Common Culprit

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects⁢ approximately one in five UK ⁢adults and is‍ a frequent offender. Symptoms extend beyond the typical heartburn,‍ regurgitation, and sour taste, ⁤often including a persistent cough and bad ‌breath. ‌ The ⁢odour arises from stomach acid and digestive gases travelling up the‌ oesophagus, irritating the throat and ⁤mouth, and fostering bacterial growth. In rarer ‍instances, bacteria like Helicobacter pylori – linked to ⁢stomach ulcers – ⁤can also contribute to unpleasant‍ smells.

Beating Back Reflux-Related Breath:

Dr. Kaye recommends several⁤ lifestyle adjustments to mitigate acid reflux:

* Dietary Modifications: Reduce or eliminate rich, spicy foods, caffeine, and ‌alcohol. Quitting smoking is‌ also crucial. These substances can weaken ‍the lower oesophageal sphincter,⁤ allowing acid to flow⁢ upwards. Individual sensitivities vary.
* ‍ Eating ⁢Habits: ‌ Avoid‌ lying down ‌promptly⁢ after eating and opt for smaller,⁣ more ⁢frequent meals.
* ‌ Over-the-Counter Relief: Antacids can provide temporary relief.
* Medical Intervention: For long-term management, consult your GP. They may prescribe ⁢proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce acid ⁤production.
* Lifestyle Factors: Maintaining a healthy weight and slightly elevating the head of your bed can also make a difference.

When Bad Breath Signals⁢ a Serious Health Issue

Occasionally, halitosis can be a warning sign of a more critically important underlying medical condition. Dr.Kaye outlines ⁣several⁤ key indicators:

*⁣ Liver Disease (Fetor Hepaticus): A musty, sweet, or sulphurous odour can indicate ⁢liver disease due to a⁣ build-up of toxins the liver can’t process.
* Kidney Failure (Uraemic Fetor): A urine-like⁢ smell on the breath can signal kidney failure.
* Uncontrolled Diabetes: A fruity or ‘pear-drop’ scent can be a sign of uncontrolled diabetes. This occurs when the body breaks down fat, releasing ketones into the ‍blood and breath. This condition⁢ requires urgent medical‌ attention, as⁢ it can also cause⁤ dehydration, nausea,⁤ vomiting, and rapid breathing.
* trimethylaminuria (“Fish-Odour Syndrome”): This rare inherited disorder prevents the breakdown‌ of trimethylamine, resulting in a fishy odour on the ⁤breath,⁣ sweat, and urine.

Know When to see a Doctor

“If bad breath is accompanied by weight loss, fatigue, nausea,or a metallic taste, see your GP⁤ for blood and urine⁤ tests,” advises⁣ Dr. Kaye. “Treating the underlying condition is key, and in most cases, once it’s managed, the smell ⁤disappears too.”

This details serves as a reminder that⁢ bad breath can be more then just a social inconvenience; ‍it ⁣can be a valuable clue ⁤to your overall health.Proactive‍ investigation and⁣ appropriate intervention are ‍essential for both ⁣fresh breath and ⁤well-being.

A 56-year-old British⁤ tourist died and a 54-year-old fellow holidaymaker was critically injured after a fall from a hotel balcony in the Canary Islands, authorities reported on October 25, 2025. Initial investigations suggest a broken railing may have been a contributing factor in the incident.

The incident occurred‍ at a hotel in[LocationwithinCanaryIslands-⁣[LocationwithinCanaryIslands-[LocationwithinCanaryIslands-⁣[LocationwithinCanaryIslands-data missing from source], raising concerns about hotel safety standards and prompting an inquiry into the structural integrity of balconies at the resort. Welcome to Hotel Hamas: 150 dangerous terrorists released by Israel under Gaza peace deal are staying at five-star luxury resort alongside unsuspecting Western tourists

Released Terrorists‌ Reside in Egyptian Hotel Under Security Watch

Following ⁤a recent ceasefire agreement, 154 individuals⁣ previously held ⁣in Israeli‍ prisons, convicted ‌of involvement in terrorist activities, are ⁤currently residing at the Mirage City Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. Their movement is restricted, with Egyptian security forces – described ⁣as⁤ heavily armed ‌and visibly present – controlling access to and from the hotel grounds.Reports⁣ indicate ⁣that permission from these‍ authorities is required for any trips outside ‍the‍ facility.

Among those released⁤ and now staying at the hotel is Basem ‌Khandakji, 41, who played a role in the 2004 Carmel Market bombing in Israel, which resulted in three deaths and over ⁣50 injuries. Khandakji reportedly used his ⁢journalist identification to transport a ‌16-year-old suicide bomber to the attack location. Despite this,‍ he has received recognition within pro-Palestinian circles, including the International Prize⁣ for Arab Fiction in 2023 for ⁤his novel, ⁤’A Mask, The Color Of‍ The Sky’. He was publicly invited to‍ a book signing⁣ event in Cairo⁤ following the award.

Another individual present at the hotel ⁤is Abu‍ Nima, who served⁢ nearly 40 years in prison for his ‍involvement in ‍the 1983 Jerusalem bus ‌bombing, which killed six people, including an 11-year-old child.Witnesses report seeing supporters⁤ seeking photographs⁣ with Nima at ⁢the hotel’s Sol Pool ‌Bar.

The situation at the hotel presents a unique ⁤juxtaposition, ⁣with⁤ a Christian couple holding a wedding‍ ceremony outdoors while the released prisoners where present. Music from‍ Abba’s “Dancing Queen” was reportedly audible in the courtyard where the prisoners were posing for photographs. Observations also⁤ indicate a degree of tension, with the released prisoners, fully clothed, observed watching Western tourists in swimwear by the pool.

despite claims of familial separation made in interviews with sympathetic media, ⁣several ⁣of ⁤the released prisoners have been seen with relatives who traveled to Egypt to meet them. issa, who received multiple life sentences and an additional 49 years for terror attacks including suicide ⁢bombings and the murder of Nissim ‌Toldeano, was observed spending ⁤time with women and ⁣children, and ⁤socializing on⁣ his balcony. He⁣ was previously held in solitary confinement for over 12 years⁤ following‍ an attempted escape in 1996.

Israeli officials have stated that‌ the decision to release 96 prisoners⁢ to the West Bank and Gaza, and deport 154 to Egypt, was made with the intention of enhanced monitoring and security. Intelligence agencies are expected to closely monitor the ⁤released⁣ individuals. this release follows previous prisoner‍ exchanges in November 2023 and January 2024.

Throughout the ⁢reporting period, the ‍released prisoners were frequently observed ‍using phones and engaging in⁢ private conversations. ‌The long-term⁢ implications of this release, particularly in light of the October ⁢7,2023 Hamas attack, are being questioned, raising concerns ‍about the potential⁤ for future plotting and the overall cost of the current ceasefire agreement.

Made In chelsea Star Yasmine ⁢Zweegers Denies Using Weight-Loss Jabs

Yasmine Zweegers has vehemently denied using weight-loss ‍jabs after appearing with a noticeably slimmer ‌figure on the ⁢latest series of Made In Chelsea. The denial⁢ comes amid speculation sparked⁣ by her recent physical change.

Zweegers’ appearance has drawn attention following her recent split from partner Sam Prince, owner of Bellr House Plants. The breakup, which⁤ occurred approximately a month ago, also marked⁤ the end of their professional collaboration on⁢ the podcast All Things Delicious.

the couple’s relationship began shortly ⁤after Prince’s split from inga Valentiner during a trip to ⁣Corsica, a breakup captured on camera for the⁤ reality series. Prince had previously been linked to Lottie Moss and Lottie‌ Tomlinson.

Prior to the split, Zweegers supported Prince at the US Open in August, where he and doubles partner Lloyd Glasspool were unexpectedly eliminated in the‍ first round⁣ after their wimbledon victory.‌ this summer, Prince and Glasspool became the first all-British pair in nearly 90 years to win the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon.

Antidepressants: Risks, Benefits, and the Stigma of Mental Health Care

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 23, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Bryony Gordon: Why Headlines About Antidepressant Side Effects Worry Me

I felt a familiar sinking feeling reading recent headlines linking antidepressants to potential⁤ side effects like weight gain‌ and heart problems. This wasn’t about my own experience – I’ve only ever experienced ‌a ‍temporary drop in libido ‌when starting antidepressants,⁢ which thankfully resolved – but about the impact such ⁢news might ‍have on those⁤ currently struggling with severe anxiety or illness. It could ⁤deter ‍them‍ from seeking,⁣ or continuing, vital treatment.

Scientists at ⁤King’s College London and the University of Oxford have recently undertaken groundbreaking work, creating what is believed to⁢ be the first “league table”‌ of antidepressant side effects. This research aims to highlight the variability between the approximately 30 antidepressant medications currently prescribed in the⁣ UK.⁤ The study revealed differences in potential effects, such as weight ‌gain of up to 2kg within weeks⁤ for some patients, and changes in blood pressure and heart rate.

Dr. Toby Pillinger,a co-author of the ⁤study ‍from ‍King’s College London, emphasized that⁤ the intention isn’t to discourage antidepressant use. Instead, the goal is “to empower patients and clinicians ⁢to make informed choices and to‍ encourage personalised care.”

Though, despite the fact that 8.89 million people in the UK are currently prescribed antidepressants, a significant stigma surrounding these medications ⁢persists. As a mental health advocate, ⁤I ⁣regularly ‌hear from⁣ individuals afraid to start treatment, or considering stopping based on‍ misinformation circulating online – often promoted‌ by ⁤those advocating expensive, unproven alternatives.

The lengthy⁤ and often alarming‍ patient information leaflets accompanying ‌antidepressants, ⁢detailing a wide‍ range of potential side effects including seizures and suicidal ⁤thoughts, don’t help to alleviate these fears. ‌This latest news is unlikely to reassure ‍those already battling anxiety.

But it’s crucial to ⁢remember‌ that people rarely turn to antidepressants unless thay’ve exhausted other‍ options and are facing immense distress. And the reality is, mental health⁣ care in this⁣ country hasn’t improved in recent years.

Throughout my own experience with antidepressants, no ⁢superior alternative for treating mental illness ⁢has emerged. For many, these medications ⁣provide a crucial‍ foundation, allowing them‍ to ‌stabilize enough to access further support ⁣- whether through private therapy or community services.

We rarely discuss‌ the consequences of not taking antidepressants when suffering from mental illness. it’s vital to acknowledge the detrimental impact prolonged depression or anxiety‌ can have on both ‌physical health‍ and overall wellbeing, particularly when there’s no effective support system in‍ place.

If⁢ these ⁣headlines have ‍caused you concern about your ⁤medication, please⁤ consult‌ your doctor before‍ making any changes. And know this: ⁣I would ⁣much rather prioritize mental stability, even with some weight gain, than relive the intense suffering I experienced at 17.
