BAKU, Azerbaijan – Indonesia is advocating for closer collaboration on media and strategic โcommunications within teh Developingโข 8 (D8)โ institution, as the group confronts escalatingโฃ global challengesโ in โขtheโข digital โฃsphere. The push comes as Jakarta prepares too assume the D8 chairmanship, aiming to amplify the voice of developing nations on the world stage.
The call for strengthened South-South cooperationโฃ was made duringโ aโ recentโค gathering in Baku, Azerbaijan, attended by officials, experts, and NGO representatives fromโ the D8 member states: Bangladesh, Egypt, โขIndonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan,โ Turkey, and newest member Azerbaijan. Discussionsโ centered on navigating the evolving globalโข media landscape and its impact on developing countries’ interests and geopolitical positioning, alongside efforts toโ boost intra-bloc trade. The โฃD8 is currently striving to moreโฃ than doubleโ its internal trade volume to US$500 billion annually by 2030.
D8 Secretary-General Isiaka Abdulโฃ Qadir Imam underscored the importance โขof developing countriesโ controlling โคtheir ownโข narratives. “The whole idea is to seeโค how we can tell our own story from the outlook ofโข the D8 organization […] to let the world know who we โare, what we have achieved โฃso far,”โฃ he stated.
Indonesia, representedโข by Foreign Ministry senior policy advisor Agustaviano Sofjan, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for a unified response to โขemerging digital challenges. “We face the persistent and accelerated spread of disinformation, widening digital inequalities โคand uneven access to reliable facts; โขand the fast-paced evolution of media technologies driven by artificial intelligenceโข as new digital platforms,” โคSofjan explained.The meetingโ represents a key step in the D8’s broader strategy to โคincrease its visibility and economicโ influence globally.
