Horror Film Obsession Lands Release Date After Festival Buzz
horror fans have a date to mark: May 15, 2026. That’s when Obsession, the critically acclaimed new film from writer-director Curry Barker, will arrive in theaters courtesy of Focus Features. The film, which debuted earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival, has quickly garnered attention for its unsettling and terrifying narrative.
Obsession centers on Bear (Michael Johnston) and his unrequited feelings for his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette). After wishing for Nikki to love him above all else-and succeeding-Bear discovers the horrifying implications of his desire. The film is described as “a messed-up, disgusting, terrifying movie” that will “chill you to the bone, make you a little sick, and have you begging for more.”
The film initially premiered at Fantastic Fest 2025, where it received rave reviews. A subsequent screening at FocusFest proved a stark reminder of the film’s intensity, as one viewer found the experience “brutal” and unsettling for their spouse.
Obsession is slated to open the same weekend as Mortal Kombat II and one week before The Mandalorian and Grogu. Focus Features is expected to release a trailer and new promotional images early next year.
