chicago Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Gary Fatal ⁤Shooting

GARY, ‍IN – ‌ A Chicago man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty⁣ to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the death of a Gary man last June, according to defense attorney⁣ Michael Campbell.

DyeQuan Kizer, 30, entered⁢ a plea agreement ⁣in April for voluntary manslaughter under‌ sudden heat, admitting to fatally ⁢shooting Darius Sims, ⁣29, of Gary, on June 9, 2023. Sims died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The incident stemmed from a domestic dispute. Court filings indicate Sims⁤ had evicted‌ his girlfriend and their two children from a⁤ residence. Kizer,‍ the children’s father, was on the phone with the woman and reportedly overheard a portion of the argument.

A “heated argument” then‍ ensued between Kizer and Sims, culminating in Kizer retrieving his children and returning to⁢ confront Sims, ultimately shooting ⁣him,‌ prosecutors stated.

Kizer faced a ⁢potential sentence of‍ 10 to 30 years. While ‍he is ineligible for sentence modification in the near future, Campbell noted in a text message that Kizer could ‍apply ⁣for a modification ⁣at a later date.He will remain on parole for the remainder of his life, court documents‍ show.

Campbell alleged that Sims used a ‍racial slur‍ when ⁢directing ⁣Kizer to ⁣pick up the children,⁣ creating a “toxic and tense situation.” At the sentencing hearing, Kizer reportedly apologized‌ to Sims’ family. filings indicate Kizer had no prior criminal record but made a “terrible decision.”

US Citizen Detained by ICE: LA Woman Released on Bond

by Emma Walker – News Editor June 27, 2025

US Citizen’s Arrest During Immigration Raid Sparks Lawsuit

A U.S. citizen, Andrea velez, was released on bond on Thursday, June 26, at a federal courthouse in Los Angeles, days after being arrested by immigration agents in what her family alleges was a case of racial profiling. The incident has ignited a debate about immigration enforcement tactics and civil rights.

Details of the Arrest

Andrea Velez, 32, a marketing designer, was dropped off by her sister and mother in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday when masked agents detained her as part of an immigration raid. according to Velez’s family, the agents grabbed her arm, pushed her to the ground, and carried her away, leaving her bruised. The family witnessed the entire event.

Did You Know? In 2023, the U.S.saw a significant increase in immigration enforcement actions, raising concerns about potential civil rights violations.

“Everything happened so fast,” Velez stated after her release. “And they didn’t identify themselves, so it was kind of scary.” Her family and lawyers reported difficulties in obtaining facts about her whereabouts until the following day.

Allegations of Racial Profiling

Velez stated that agents did not request her identification until after she was placed in a vehicle. After showing them her California driver’s license, authorities questioned its validity, prompting her to provide additional information, including her medical insurance details. Velez and her legal team believe the arrest stemmed from racial profiling.

Gregory Russell, Velez’s attorney in her criminal case, emphasized the need for fair law enforcement operations, free from racial profiling. “Our law enforcement need to conduct their official operations in a process that is fair,” Russell said. “Not racial profiling, not wearing head coverings, not walking around without ICE clearly marked on their uniforms.”

Legal Action Planned

Federal officials have accused velez of obstructing federal agents and interfering with their duties during the immigration enforcement operation on Tuesday. However, Velez and her attorneys maintain that she did not attempt to impede any arrests and posed no physical threat due to her smaller stature compared to the agents.

Luis Carrillo, the family’s lawyer, informed KCAL News of their intention to file a civil lawsuit against the government, alleging wrongful arrest. “They see people with brown faces and yank them,” Carrillo stated. “You see it in the videos all the time. They don’t go into white neighborhoods. They pick out the Latino communities, and that’s where they do their dirty work.”

Pro Tip: Understanding your rights during an encounter with law enforcement is crucial. Consult with an attorney if you believe your rights have been violated.

The Broader Context of Immigration Raids

Immigration raids have long been a contentious issue in the United States, sparking debates about their effectiveness, fairness, and impact on communities. Critics argue that these operations often lead to the separation of families and create a climate of fear, while supporters maintain that they are necessary for enforcing immigration laws.

The debate surrounding immigration extends beyond enforcement tactics to encompass broader questions about migration and its impact on society. Some sources suggest that the key question is how to make migration work best for all involved [[2]].

What are your thoughts on the use of immigration raids? How can immigration policies be reformed to ensure fairness and respect for human rights?

Evergreen Insights: Understanding Immigration Enforcement

Immigration enforcement in the U.S.is primarily carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a federal agency responsible for identifying, arresting, and deporting individuals who violate immigration laws.Enforcement actions can range from targeted operations focusing on specific individuals with criminal records to broader raids aimed at apprehending undocumented immigrants in workplaces or residential areas.

The legality and ethics of these enforcement actions are frequently challenged in court, with civil rights organizations arguing that they often violate constitutional protections against unlawful search and seizure and discriminate against minority communities. The impact of immigration enforcement on families and communities is a subject of ongoing debate and research.
