Jane Buffett, widow of the late singer jimmy buffett, is alleging that her late husband’s former business manager, Michael Mozenter, has mismanaged trust funds intended for her financial support. The claims are detailed in a recent court filing in Florida, following a lawsuit Mozenter filed in California. Jimmy Buffett, known for his hit song “margaritaville,” passed away on September 1, 2023. He wrote the song “Come Monday” about jane in 1974, and they married in 1977.
According to jane Buffett’s filings, after her husband’s death, Mozenter allegedly delayed responding for over a year when she inquired about expected income from the trust to cover her expenses. In February 2025, Mozenter reportedly informed her that the trust’s $275 million in assets would yield less than $2 million in net income annually, a rate of return below one percent. He allegedly advised her that this income would not suffice for her annual expenses and suggested she consider making adjustments or selling her own real estate to bridge the gap.
The filings also state that Mozenter allegedly paid himself and his firm $1.7 million from trust assets in the past year. Jane’s filing asserts that Mozenter has “belittled, disrespected, and condescended to Mrs.Buffett” in response to her requests for details she is entitled to receive.
Jane Buffett alleges that Mozenter initiated his June 2 lawsuit prematurely, after her legal team shared a courtesy copy of a petition she intended to file against him in Los Angeles County Superior court. She contends that his lawsuit, aimed at retaining control over her wealth against her explicit wishes, is illogical and confirms the impossibility of them serving as co-trustees.
Her filing further states that “Contrary to the instruction to give ‘primary regard’ to mrs. Buffett’s best interests, Mr. Mozenter consistently has acted as if Mrs. Buffett is a nuisance whose interests are secondary to his authority.” Jane alleges Mozenter has displayed “openly opposed” behaviour towards her while “wasting marital trust assets by litigating in multiple forums.”
A hearing for Jane’s California lawsuit is scheduled for August 14. However, this date is likely to be removed if Jane proceeds with dismissing the Los Angeles County action as indicated in her new Florida filing.
