Renowned Shark Researcher Undergoes Surgery After Incident in Costa โขRica
Isla del Coco, Costaโ Rica – Dr. Mauricio Hoyos, a 48-year-old Mexican scientist internationally recognized for his sharkโ research, underwent a complex surgery on Monday afternoon after sustaining โฃinjuries from a shark bite. The incidentโ occurred while Dr. Hoyos was leading a โฃscientific expedition offโค the coast of Isla del Coco, โฃas part of the One Ocean worldwideโ coalition.
Jorge Serendero, director of the For The oceans Foundation and a close friend of Dr. Hoyos, confirmed the surgery to teletica.com.Serendero described the operation โas “fairlyโ complex” and anticipated itโค would take many hours to complete.
“Itโฃ is a fairly โcomplex surgery andโ it will last a lot of โhours in the operating room. Right now โคI am in the clinic, but I talked with him on โthe phone minutesโ before he entered surgery. He told me: ‘I am well, positiveโ and forward.'”
According to Serendero, this wasโฃ an unusual event. โขDr. Hoyos previously experienced a minor incident with a shark โคwhile inside a protective cage, but this occasion was different. “Mauricio once had a small accident with aโข shark, when โhe was inside a cage, but nothing happened;โ however, this occasionโ was something extraordinary and it shoudl be said that it was not an attack, butโข a shark โreaction when they were marking it,” serendero explained.
Dr. Hoyos entered surgery at 1:30 pm local time and โwas still undergoing โคthe procedure as of 5:10 pm.The shark bit him on the head, causing injuries to the left side of his face and scalp.
Following the incident, dr. Hoyos was transported from Isla delโค Coco to San Josรฉ,a journeyโ of approximately 650 kilometers. the transfer and โsubsequent preparation for surgery tookโ approximately 42 hours.
