Denver Superintendentโฃ Alex Marrero Will Remain with District, Dispels Chicagoโ Rumors
DENVER – Denver Public Schools Superintendent โขAlex Marrero affirmed today โฃhe will remain in his role, โคdismissing recent speculation linking him to the Chicago Public Schools leadership search.Marrero,โฃ whoโฃ has led Denver Public Schools since โค2021,โฃ released a statement through theโค district confirming his โcommitment to the Denverโ community.
Marrero’s tenure has seen graduation rates rise and the district’s state rating improve to “green” this โyear,the second-highest โคrating,for the first time since 2019. Prior to Denver, he served as interim superintendent of New Rochelle, New York, and held assistant โคsuperintendent โขpositions in New Rochelle and East Ramapo, New York. โHe began his career in New York City as a guidanceโ counselor, assistant principal, and principal, and also attendedโ school in the Bronx.
Despite these gains, Marrero has โคfaced challenges including concerns over school safety โfollowing a string of shootings near Denver’s East High โSchool, and controversy surrounding school closures and โคcentral office cuts, issues noted in his latest performance evaluation.โ
His current contract with Denver Public Schools extends through 2028, having โขbeenโ extended twice, most recently in May. The Denver school board also โคapproved a raise for Marrero inโค 2023, bringing his current salary to $346,529.
Marrero is โactively โคinvolved in โขnational education leadership, serving as president of theโข Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents and โonโ the executive committee of the Council of Great City Schools.He โidentifies asโค Afro Latino and โis โคbilingual, reflecting the diversity โof the โdenverโค student โขpopulation, where โคover half the students are latino and roughly a third are Englishโ language learners.
