Jerry Jones Open to Cowboys Trades as Deadline Approaches
FRISCO, TX - october 29, 2024 - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated Tuesday he is willing to consider trades to bolster the team ahead of the NFL trade deadline, though he emphasized a disciplined approach. Speaking on 105.3 The Fan, Jones stated the Cowboys will “absolutely” explore opportunities if they present themselves, but won’t be reckless in pursuit of short-term gains.
“we’re always looking to improve our team,” Jones said. “But we’re not going to do something just to do something. It has to make sense for the long term, and it has to fit within our salary cap situation.” The Cowboys currently hold a 5-2 record, leading the NFC East, but Jones acknowledged the need to address vulnerabilities, particularly at safety given recent injuries to Alijah Clark and concerns surrounding Juanyeh Thomas.
The Cowboys’ injury situation at safety is particularly acute. clark is out with a rib injury and is highly likely to miss the game against Arizona, while Thomas is questionable with a migraine. Donovan wilson, a regular starter, is expected to return from an elbow injury. Center Cooper Beebe is also questionable, potentially returning from an ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve in Week 2.
Jones did not specify any particular positions the team is targeting, but the safety position is widely considered a need. The Cowboys have relied heavily on undrafted rookie Alijah Clark in recent weeks, and his injury further underscores the team’s depth issues.
The NFL trade deadline is October 31st.
