Eaglecrest Ski Area โขPostpones opening Day Dueโฃ to Unseasonably โฃwarm Weather
Juneau,Alaska – Eaglecrest skiโค Area will delay its opening weekend after recent rainfall erased accumulated snowfall, officials announced Thursday. The postponement impactsโฃ the start of the ski area’sโ highly anticipated 50th season.
General Manager Craig Cimmons explained that while the first Saturday in Decemberโค is traditionally eyed as a potential โคopening day,it’sโข often subject toโค change given Juneau’s climate. “We โalways put the firstโ Saturday โas the potential opening day, knowing that it’s hit or miss with the โขclimate we have,” โCimmons said. “It’s not abnormal and it’s notโค a disappointment.”โ
Recent years have seen similar delays due to insufficient snowpack. Eaglecrest utilizes high-efficiency snowmaking equipment to supplement natural snowfall, but Cimmons stated current conditions don’t allow for aโ qualityโ experience. “We couldn’t push out the snow weโข made inโ a wayโ that โคwe woudlโข feel we’reโ delivering a product that we’re really proud of,โ that’s safe andโ enjoyable, and an experience we want to offer,” he explained.
The National Weather Service in Juneau forecasts โa return to wintry conditions, predicting snow from this weekend through Tuesday โฃnight with temperatures dipping to around 15 degreesโค Fahrenheit.
Eaglecrest plans toโ provideโ an update on the opening date status mid-next โweek. The ski area will continue to monitor conditions and assess when โsufficient snow coverage can be established for a safe and enjoyableโฃ skiing experience.
