Chronic Itch: Causes, Impact & Expert Solutions

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor February 16, 2026

One in four people will experience chronic itch at some point in their lives, a condition that can severely diminish quality of life, often with causes unrelated to skin conditions themselves. This was highlighted by leading neurodermatologist Sonja Ständer, whose work focuses on understanding and treating this debilitating ailment.

Chronic pruritus, defined as itch lasting longer than six weeks, affects approximately 13 to 17 percent of the adult population in Germany, according to experts at the German Dermatological Society (DDG). The condition frequently triggers a “juck-kratz-zirkel” – an itch-scratch cycle – where scratching provides temporary relief but ultimately exacerbates skin damage, leading to inflammation, bleeding, and further itching.

“People with chronic pruritus often sleep poorly. When the marks of scratching are visible, they feel ashamed, which can lead to social withdrawal and depression,” explained Professor Ständer, leading senior physician at the Clinic for Skin Diseases and head of the interdisciplinary Pruritus Center at the University Hospital Münster (UKM). She noted that a common misconception exists regarding the condition, as it is not typically contagious.

The underlying causes of chronic itch are often systemic, originating within the body rather than being localized to the skin. This complexity necessitates a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis, and treatment. Recent research into neuroimmune mechanisms has led to the development of new pharmaceutical solutions, including monoclonal antibodies, aimed at disrupting the itch response.

Professor Ständer, recognized as a leading figure in the field, will present insights into the causes and treatment options for chronic itch at the upcoming Spektrum Dermatologie Kongress. Her presentation will also explore the parallels between chronic pruritus and chronic pain, acknowledging the often-avoided discomfort associated with those experiencing chronic itch.

The DDG will host an online press conference on April 29, 2025, to discuss diagnostic approaches, therapeutic options, and the latest research into the origins of persistent itching, coinciding with the 53rd DDG-Tagung in Berlin from April 30 to May 3, 2025.
