Malaysian duo Chen Tang Jie & Toh Ee Weiโ Aim toโฃ Ignite Mixed Doubles Revolution
PETALING JAYA, Malaysia – Fresh off their historic World Championship victory, Malaysian mixed doubles pairโ Chen Tang Jieโ and Tohโ Ee Wei are hoping โto spark a new era of success for the discipline within their nation.โ Their recent triumph in Paris marked the first-ever world title for a Malaysian mixed doubles team, a feat thay believe โcan inspire a generation of young players.
Forโ years, Malaysian โbadmintonโ has traditionally found its success โคin men’s doubles and men’s singles. Tang Jie and Ee Wei are โขdetermined to change that narrative.
“Mixed doubles hasn’t always received the attentionโค it deserves, and we โคhope to change that,”โฃ Tang Jie stated on Friday. “We โwantโ to showโค that mixed doubles โฃcanโ achieve glory for Malaysia, and we hope our achievement inspires more players to pursue this discipline.”
Currently โคranked No.3 in the โworld, โTang Jieโ and Ee Wei lead the Malaysian charge in mixed doubles. They are โคfollowed by the โฃindependent duo of Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie โ(No. 8) and Hooโ Pang Ron and Cheng Su โYin (No.โฃ 14). However, a concerning lack of depth โexists, with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) heavilyโ reliant โขon thes two pairs.
The pair’s rapid ascent is especially remarkable consideringโ they were only partnered at the end of 2022. Their chemistry was immediate, leadingโ to victories at the โฃ2023 Taiwanโข Open and Orleans Masters. This success propelled them to qualify forโค the Paris olympics, where they reached theโค quarter-finals in their โdebut appearance. They โขcontinued their momentum with a Super 500 Korean Open title just a month after the Games.
Their journey wasn’tโ without โขhurdles.โ In December, they reached the final of the World Tour Finals, narrowly losing to China’s โreigning champions Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong. The pair even faced a temporary split in March due to personal differences, but quickly resolved their issuesโ and reunited, demonstrating theirโ commitment to โtheir partnership.
Despite the recent success, tang Jie remains grounded. “Ee Wei and I didn’t suddenly become โฃworld champions. Every experience, every tournament, helped us reachโค this โpoint,” he explained. “We’ll face both victories and defeats in the future. Weโ need to stay humble, keep fighting โfor our country, and be thankfulโ for the opportunity to play the sport we love.”
Tangโ Jie and Ee Wei will next compete at the China Mastersโค in Shenzhen, starting Tuesday, September 16th, where โขthey will face Americans Chen Zhi Yi and Francesca Corbett โin โthe opening round.โข Their performance will be closely watched as they aim to build on their World Championship win and solidify โMalaysia’s position as aโข force in the world of mixed doubles.
