Townsville,QLD – Five Australia Post staff members were hospitalized Tuesday after โฃa chemical leak at postal facilities in Charters Towers and Townsville,Queensland. All five โhave since been discharged from hospital after experiencing minor irritations.
Authorities are investigating the source ofโ the โleak, whichโค was identified as a โhazardous insecticide. The incidents prompted responses from the โขQueensland Fire Department and Queensland Police.
“The safety of our โteam members is our numberโค one priority and Australia Post has strong, well-established โsafety protocols around these โincidents,” an Australia Post โspokesperson said.
Theโค first incident occurred at the Australia Post site โคin Charters Towers. โShortly after, a similar โฃleak was reported in Townsville.
Acting Townsville Station Officer Lee Burke confirmed the chemical involvedโ was a hazardous insecticide while conducting urgentโ testing at the scene.
“Weโ remind all customers โคof the vital safety regulationsโ in place around the sending โคof hazardous, prohibited and restricted goods,” the Australia Post spokesperson added.
The Queensland Fire Departmentโข is considering whether to refer the matter to Queensland Police for โfurther investigation.
