Brasรญlia – In a move to shield him from potential repercussions related to ongoing legal challenges, Eduardo Bolsonaro has been appointed leader of the House minority, replacing santa Catarina Deputy Carol de Toni. The leadership change, announced Tuesday, is a strategic maneuver by the Liberal party (PL) as it pushes for a vote on an amnesty project that could impact convictions stemming from the 2022 election aftermath, including those of Jair Bolsonaro and others involved in the alleged coup attempt.
De Toni announced her resignation at a news conference, stating the decision was made “convinced that brazil needs unity and courage, especially in the face of the political persecution that both eduardo and his father, Jair Bolsonaro, are suffering.” PL leader Gostenes Cavalcante (RJ) indicated the party believes there is procedural support to allow Eduardo Bolsonaro to participate in House sessions despite potential restrictions.
The move has drawn immediate criticism from the ruling Workers’ Party (PT). Deputy lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ) stated the party intends to challenge the leadership change in the House and potentially in court, viewing it as a tactic to protect Eduardo Bolsonaro.
The amnesty project, which seeks to overturn convictions related to the alleged coup attempt, could be brought to a vote as early as this week, according to PL Deputy Motta. The change in leadership is widely seen as an attempt to bolster support for the controversial proposal and safeguard the political future of both Eduardo and Jair Bolsonaro.
