El Salvador’s New National Stadium: Largest in Central America Nears Completion

The China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) announced in early February the completion of the metal framework for the stands of the National Stadium of El Salvador, marking a significant milestone in the construction of the new sports arena. The announcement coincided with the installation of the first piece of the metal covering that will ultimately define the stadium’s architectural appearance.

According to the National Institute of Sports of El Salvador (INDES), the metal covering will weigh approximately 14,000 tons upon completion. The structure is being built on the site of the former Captain General Gerardo Barrios Military School, which has been relocated to accommodate the project.

René Martínez, Director General of INDES, emphasized the project’s adherence to the established timeline, stating that work is progressing as planned. Zhang Yanhui, the Chinese Ambassador to El Salvador, indicated that the assembly of the stands could be finished by the end of July, with the main structure expected to be completed by the end of the year. The stadium is slated for inauguration in 2027.

The new stadium, located in Antiguo Cuscatlán, within the metropolitan area of San Salvador, is designed to accommodate 50,000 seated spectators, making it the largest stadium in Central America. The project is entirely financed by the Chinese government, including furnishing and all associated costs, as part of agreements signed between the presidents of El Salvador and China, Nayib Bukele and Xi Jinping, during Jinping’s visit to the country in 2019.

The architectural concept centers around a large enveloping dome covering the stands, functioning as both a facade and a roof. The design is inspired by a water droplet and the waves of the Pacific Ocean, reflecting El Salvador’s historical connection to rain and the sea. Plans include VIP areas, boxes, media spaces, facilities for people with disabilities, and team locker rooms. A smart lighting and security system is also planned.

On February 8, 2026, China State Construction presented the progress of the National Stadium of El Salvador, according to INDES. A video presentation of the progress was also shared on the INDES Facebook page on February 9, 2026.
