Santa Clara County Restores Critical Services at Regional Medical Center, Bolstering Care for Vulnerable Populations
Santa clara County has successfully reinstated vital medical services, including trauma, heart attack, and stroke care, at the Regional Medical Center in East San Jose. This move follows the county’s acquisition of the facility from for-profit operator HCA Healthcare last year,a decision spurred by public concern over previous service reductions and the closure of its trauma center.
The Regional Medical Center plays a crucial role in the county’s healthcare landscape, serving a significant portion of low-income and uninsured residents. Approximately half of the hospital system’s patient base relies on Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, which covers one in four of the county’s nearly 2 million residents. The remaining patients utilize a combination of other payment methods and Medicare, the federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as younger people with certain disabilities.
county officials emphasize that the integrated approach to patient care, which includes embedded wraparound services, is essential given the hospital system’s commitment to serving the most vulnerable populations. As described by Dr. Phuong Duong, this complete care model means patients may receive referrals for behavioral health or housing services alongside emergency treatment. This strategy aims to elevate the well-being of all community members by prioritizing the needs of those most in need.
