Solo – The year 2024 is very special because there will be a rare phenomenon that will occur, namely a Total Solar Eclipse. Not a few people are enthusiastic about witnessing this natural phenomenon.

How could it not be, the last total solar eclipse occurred 3 years ago. More precisely on December 4 2021 in Antarctica.

In Indonesia itself, the last Total Solar Eclipse occurred on March 9 2016. This event can be observed throughout Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Apart from that, the same solar eclipse also had an impact on the Pacific region.

When did the last solar eclipse occur in Indonesia?

The last partial solar eclipse occurred in Indonesia on April 20 2023. Reported Detik news, The solar eclipse that occurred in Indonesia was a total and partial solar eclipse.

This eclipse can also be observed from all regions of Indonesia. There are only a few areas that are not affected by this phenomenon at all, namely the northern province of Aceh.

What is a Total Solar Eclipse?

Quoted from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA page, a total solar eclipse is a phenomenon that occurs when the sun, moon and earth are in a parallel line so that the moon’s shadow covers all of the sun’s rays.

If there is a total solar eclipse, some areas on earth will be completely dark for a few moments. Apart from Total Solar Eclipses, there are also Partial and Hybrid Solar Eclipses.

When will the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse occur?

Still quoted from NASA, this year there will be a Total Solar Eclipse after three years. This event will occur on April 8.

Unfortunately, Indonesia is not affected by this eclipse. The regions that will experience a Total Solar Eclipse are Mexico, the United States and Canada.

In 2024, NASA also predicts that a ring solar eclipse will occur. This eclipse will occur on October 2, 2024. Unfortunately, only Argentina and Chile are affected.

There will be no solar eclipse in Indonesia in the near future. NASA itself estimates that Indonesia will experience an annular solar eclipse on May 21, 2031.

This is a complete explanation of the Total Solar Eclipse which will occur in 2024. Hope it is useful!

Jakarta –

Sky watchers will be in for a surprise this year. A series of miracles nature phenomenon will light up the night sky and you can see it.

The main shows that will captivate hundreds of millions of people include Total Solar Eclipse and meteor Rain which is spectacular. In countries further from the equator, dazzling auroras are expected to be seen more frequently as the Sun approaches its solar maximum.

The following are important dates for spectacular astronomical phenomena that are worth marking on your calendar this year, as quoted from National Geographic.

January 18 – Jupiter and the Moon ‘Dance’ Together

Early 2024 will begin with the fusion of two bright celestial objects, the Moon and Jupiter. The largest planet in the Solar System will dominate the evening sky on January 18, appearing next to a shining crescent Moon.

If you missed it in January, don’t worry, because Jupiter and the Moon will meet again in the sky on February 14, March 13 and April 10 in a series of conjunctions that follow the Moon’s monthly cycle around Earth.

Each display will be unique in its own right, with the Moon presenting itself in various phases and orientations alongside the giant planet. Astronomy lovers need to train their binoculars to aim at Jupiter if they want to get a view of the four large moons lined up alongside it.

April 8 – Total Solar Eclipse

The major celestial event of the year is a stunning total solar eclipse that will darken the skies for millions of observers across North America as the Moon completely covers the Sun.

The total path when the entire disk of the Sun is covered by the Moon, will cross four Mexican states, 15 US states stretching from Texas to Maine, and five Canadian provinces in the eastern part of the country.

The duration of totality varies along the path, lasting up to four minutes and 28 seconds near the Mexican city of Torreón, while most places in the middle of the path will experience darkness for three and a half to four minutes.

Because Indonesia cannot watch it, Indonesian astronomy fans can watch it via live streaming on the NASA website and a number of sites that review astronomy.

April – Bright Comet Passes Near Earth

A giant comet three times the size of Mount Everest, named 12P/Pons-Brooks is rapidly moving towards the inner part of the Solar System.

The cryovolcanic comet, which consists mostly of ice, dust and gas, experienced several explosions in 2023, and surprised astronomers with its rapid increase in brightness. In March, as the comet gets closer to the Sun, it is expected to accelerate due to the increasing gravitational pull of our star.

In April, it can even be seen with the naked eye just after the Sun sets in the western sky. It is estimated that on April 12, the comet will appear to swing near brilliant Jupiter, making it easier to track.

Nine days later, on April 21, comet Pons-Brooks will reach its closest point to the Sun and possibly reach peak brightness making it one of the best opportunities to catch a glimpse of it.

The comet will also be visible during the April 8 total solar eclipse. If the comet appears close to the eclipsed Sun, and could potentially be seen with binoculars or even the naked eye, it would be a rare duet of celestial sightings.

May 4 – Peak of the Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower

Shooting star fans will definitely not want to miss the Eta Aquarid meteor shower in 2024, as sky conditions promise to be ideal for the peak of the meteor shower.

The best views of this phenomenon are expected to occur in the early hours of May 4, when the waning crescent moon will not rise until dawn, meaning dark skies will allow stargazers to catch a glimpse of even the faintest shooting stars.

The rain shower will be near the southeastern horizon in the rain constellation, Aquarius. Because of this location, the sky show will be more clearly visible to observers in the Southern Hemisphere.

Jakarta –

What are the celestial phenomena of 2024? Astronomers have noted a number of night sky moments this year that shouldn’t be missed.

A team of astronomers at the Royal Observatory Greenwich discovered that there are various astronomical views in the night sky in 2024. Reported by the Royal Museum Greenwich, some of them include the oldest meteor shower, including the Andromeda galaxy.

Quoted from Smithsonian Magazine, sky observers can also see a total solar eclipse and a partial lunar eclipse. Here’s the list.

Sky Phenomenon 2024

Venus and Mercury

Both planets are bright enough to be seen with the naked eye. However, the best viewing time is when Venus or Mercury is farthest from the Sun. That way, the two planets may still be above the horizon when the Sun has set and will no longer dazzle the view around them.

Venus itself does not reach its greatest eastern or western elongation in 2024. However, the best views of this “morning and evening star” can still be seen in January before sunrise or in December after sunset.

Meanwhile, to see Mercury, look for its greatest elongation. Do this for the western part in the morning around January 12, May 9 and September 5 2024. Meanwhile, the eastern part of the extension will be visible in the evening, around March 24, July 22 and November 16 2024.

Astronomers warn, don’t look directly at the Sun. If observing with a telescope or binoculars, wait until after sunset or before sunrise.

Another Galaxy

The new moon on March 10 2024 can be used to search for celestial objects in the cosmos. After sunset, look northwest. The Andromeda Galaxy will be visible near the constellations Andromeda and Cassiopeia.

The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest galaxy to the Milky Way. This galaxy can be seen with the naked eye or with the help of binoculars in dark areas far from city lights.

Total Solar Eclipse

The Moon will pass directly between the Earth and the Sun on April 8, 2024. The Moon completely blocking the Sun will produce a total solar eclipse. Use eclipse glasses or other eye protection to observe this phenomenon.

When this phenomenon occurs, the sky will become dark. The 2024 total solar eclipse is expected to last longer than the 2017 phenomenon, namely 4 minutes at most.

Oldest Meteor Shower

The Lyrids meteor shower will be visible throughout April 14-30 2023. The peak of this meteor shower will take place on April 22-23 2024.

The best time to see the Lyrids is around April 23 2024, weather permitting. This is because rainfall in 2024 is predicted to reach its maximum during the full moon. Therefore, Moonlight can affect vision.

This meteor shower is the oldest meteor shower that is still visible today. This meteor shower was first recorded in 687 BC.

The Lyrids were sourced from Thatcher’s Comet C/1861 G1. This comet orbits the Sun once every 415 years.

Meteor Shower in the Constellation Aquarius

The Eta Aquarid meteor shower originates from the famous Halley’s Comet. This comet is visible from Earth once every 75-76 years.

This meteor shower takes place between 19 April-28 May 2024. The peak of the Eta Aquarid meteor shower takes place around 6 May 2024. The speed is up to 50 meteors per hour.

The good news is that this rain will be more visible in the Southern Hemisphere. Look east to see the star Eta Aquarid in the constellation Aquarius.

Fast, Bright, Perseid Meteor Shower Plus Fireballs

The Perseid meteor shower will be active between 17 July-24 August 2024. Its peak is expected to occur on 12-13 August 2024.

The bright meteors and high hourly speed make the Perseid meteor shower often looked forward to. The peak of this meteor shower can reach speeds of 100 meteors per hour, with the bonus of seeing fireballs.

Look for dark spots in the sky to see some Perseid meteors. The Perseids will appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus. This rain originates from the debris flow of the Great Comet of 1862, namely comet Swift-Tuttle.

Partial Lunar Eclipse

A partial lunar eclipse will appear around September 17 2024. Observation does not require protective glasses.

Planets in Space

Four planets will be in opposition in 2024, namely Saturn, Neptune, Uranus and Jupiter. In opposition, the planet is located opposite the Sun in the sky. Therefore, these planets will be fully illuminated by the Sun so that they appear the brightest.

This astrophotography moment has the potential to be captured by the lens. Saturn itself moves into opposition on September 8 2024, Neptune on September 21 2024, Uranus on November 17 2024, and Jupiter on December 7 2024.

Komet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS

Astronomers estimate that Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (A3) can be seen with the naked eye and will pass close to the Earth and the Sun in the fall of 2024.

This comet will pass closest to the Sun on September 28 2024. Meanwhile, with Earth, comet A3 is expected to be closest on October 12 2024.

Super Fast Meteor Shower

This meteor shower will rain up to around 25 meteors per hour and pass very quickly. The Orionid meteor shower peaks around the evening of October 21, 2024.

To see this meteor shower, look for a bright streak of light in the sky. This meteor also originates from small grains of Halley’s Comet which hit the Earth’s atmosphere.

Supermoon

Supermoon aka super full moon at perigee will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than the full moon at apogee. Supermoons will appear on September 18 2024 and October 17 2024.

The moon revolves around the Earth in an elliptical or oval orbit. This means, the Moon moves from its closest distance to humans (perigee) to its furthest distance from humans (apogee). When the full Moon or new Moon is at the perigee point, a Supermoon occurs.

Seven Sisters Star Cluster

The Pleiades star cluster can be observed throughout November 2024. This open star cluster with bright blue light in the constellation Taurus can be seen with the naked eye or with the help of binoculars.

This star cluster is also called the seven sister star cluster because its seven stars are the brightest and can be seen directly. However, there are actually more than 1,000 stars that make up it.

The Pleiades are about 100 million years old. This means that dinosaurs were still alive when these stars formed.

Raining 150 Meteors Per Hour

The Geminid meteor shower can be active with up to 150 meteors per hour on December 4-20 2024. The large number and longer passing duration per meteor make this meteor shower one of the best sky shows of 2024.

However, in 2024, the peak is expected to be at the full moon on December 14-15. This causes the Moon’s light to obscure the view of the meteor shower.

NASA Assures Giant Asteroid 2007 FT3 Will Not Hit Earth in October 2024

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 4, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Jakarta –

Some time ago, the world was shocked by rumors about a giant asteroid the size of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France which would hit Earth. The rumor also states that the time this happened was October 5, 2024.

Widely discussed, the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) responded to these rumors. They said there was no need to worry about this because it was just a prediction on a scale of 1 in 11 million.

This means that NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (JPL) identified 89 potential impacts from the presence of this giant asteroid called 2007 FT3. One of them is a collision that occurred on October 5, 2024.

However, they further explained that one of the potential points for the collision did not occur directly on Earth but was at the point closest to Earth. This prediction was issued in 2019, but the collision did not occur.

To get to know the asteroid 2007 FT3 more deeply, let’s look at various interesting facts quoted from CNN Indonesia to Unilad, Thursday (4/1/2024).

3 Facts about Asteroid 2007 FT3 as Big as the Eiffel Tower

1. The missing asteroid

One of the nicknames attached to the asteroid 2007 FT3 is the lost asteroid. This celestial object was first discovered in 2007 but was only visible for 1.2 days until it finally disappeared from NASA’s observations.

Asteroid 2007 FT3 is up to 314 meters long. This size is compared to the Eiffel Tower which is 330 meters high.

If it hit Earth, this lost asteroid would release 2.6 billion tons of TNT. That’s about 2,600 megatrons of TNT or about 48 Tsar Bombs exploding.

The Tsar Bomb was the largest nuclear bomb and the most powerful nuclear weapon in history owned by the Soviet Union.

2. Denied by NASA, it will not hit Earth

Through IFL Science, NASA and other observatories continue to track various celestial objects near Earth that measure 140 meters or larger. It is said that an object that large could cause destruction if it collided with Earth.

One thing that can be noted is that astronomers predict that no object measuring more than 140 meters has a significant chance of hitting Earth in the next 100 years. Thus, the asteroid 2007 FT3 is also not on the radar for a collision with Earth for the next century.

“There is no threat of a known asteroid impact hitting Earth in the next century. NASA and its partners diligently scan the sky to find, track, and categorize asteroids and near-Earth objects (NEOs), including those that may come close to Earth,” a spokesperson said NASA.

Basically, large objects will be easy for astronomers to detect and anticipate. So if the asteroid 2007 FT3 is on the radar, it should be well known and understood for years to decades.

UNILAD also explained that the possibility of the asteroid 2007 FT3 hitting Earth on October 5 2024 is very small. This date is considered to sound very specific, even though the impact could occur between 2004 and 2116.

The asteroids and other currently known objects closest to Earth are called NEA/NEO. NASA estimates that there are 32,000 NEA/NEOs and around 120 comets that will pass near Earth in the next few hundred years.

3. Asteroid 2007 FT3 is not the largest

Even though it is considered to cause a lot of damage, the largest asteroid that could hit Earth is not 2007 FT3. But the asteroid 29075 (1950 DA) is capable of ending all life on Earth as a whole, but no further predictions regarding this are known.

Another theory about an asteroid that might hit Earth concerns the planet Jupiter. Yes, the largest planet in the solar system.

Not directly, Jupiter is thought to act as a shield for Earth. However, the asteroid directly hit Jupiter.

After the impact, the impact may reach Earth. Even so, the impact may not be too detrimental to life on Earth.

So, those are 3 facts about an asteroid the size of the Eiffel Tower which will hit Earth in October 2024. Don’t panic and make sure it’s true, detikers!

Jakarta –

The sky in January 2024 will be decorated with various phenomena that are a shame to miss. What are these phenomena? Check out the following review.

These celestial phenomena consist of the full moon, the appearance of planets, and the Quadrantids meteor shower which will start 2024. Some of these phenomena cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Therefore, tools such as a telescope or binoculars are needed. Below detikJateng summarizes 6 celestial phenomena in January 2024, quoted from the official website of the Royal Museum Greenwich and seasky.org.

January 2024 Sky Phenomena

January 3-4: Quadrantids Meteor Shower

The Quadrantids is a meteor shower that is considered above average, with the possibility of reaching up to 40 meteors per hour at its peak. This event occurs every year between January 1-5, with a peak on the evening of the 3rd and the morning of the 4th.

The best location to see it is from a dark place after midnight. These meteors will appear to shine from the constellation Bootes, but can appear in various locations in the sky.

January 11: New Moon

The Moon will be on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This situation occurred at 11:59 UTC.

The New Moon is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no Moonlight to interfere.

January 12: Mercury Elongation

The planet Mercury will be at its greatest western elongation of 23.5 degrees from the Sun. The best time to see Mercury is when the planet is at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Mercury can be found just before sunrise in the eastern sky.

January 18: Jupiter and the Moon

The largest planet in the solar system will dominate the night sky on that date and appear right next to the moon. In fact, with binoculars you can also observe the four large moons of Jupiter that are around it.

January 25: Full Moon

The Moon will be on the opposite side of the Earth to the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated at 17:55 UTC. This Full Moon was known by early American Indian tribes as the Wolf Moon because it was the time when packs of hungry wolves howled outside their camps. This month is also known as the Old Moon and Moon After Yule.

January 30: Appearance of Comet 62P/Tsuchinshan

Comet 62P/Tsuchinshan reached its closest point to the Sun on Christmas Eve, and will reach its closest point to Earth on January 30, at a distance of about 75 million kilometers.

At this time, this comet will be visible in the constellation Leo. However, this comet cannot be seen with the naked eye and requires very dark skies to see it.

That’s the information about 6 celestial phenomena that will occur in January 2023. Save the date, detikers!

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

Supermoon or a Super Full Moon will be celestial phenomenon a special one in 2024. Check out the gig schedule below.

This phenomenon occurs during the full moon phase with the Moon being the closest to the Earth in its orbit.

Because the source of the Moon’s light as seen from Earth is the reflection of sunlight, the shape of the Moon as seen from Earth will change. These changes in the shape of the Moon as seen from Earth are called the phases of the Moon.

Of the various phases of the Moon, there are four main phases, namely the new moon phase, the early half-full moon phase (first quarter), the full moon phase, and the late half-full moon phase (last quarter).

The shape of the Moon’s orbit when the Moon revolves around the Earth is an ellipse. As a result, there will be a time when the Moon is closest to the Earth, which is called perigee.

On the other hand, if the Moon is farthest from Earth, it is called apogee.

The period of revolution of the Moon in its orbital plane is calculated from the position of perigee to apogee and back to perigee which is called the anomalistic period, which on average takes 27.55455 days (27 days 13 hours 18 minutes 33 seconds).

BMKG in the official page said that the new Moon phase will not observe the size of the Moon, except during a solar eclipse. It is the comparison of the size of the Moon during the full moon phase at apoge with the Moon during the full moon phase at perigee that can be observed well.

The following is the schedule for the perigee full moon or commonly known as Supermoon in 2024:

1. August 20 2024 at 01.25 WIB

2. August 21, 2024 at 12.04 WIB

3. September 18 2024 at 09.34 WIB

4. September 18 2024 at 20.26 WIB

5. October 17 2024 at 07.45 WIB

6. October 17, 2024 at 18.26 WIB

7. November 14, 2024 at 18.17 WIB

8. November 16 2024 at 04.28 WIB

9. December 12, 2024 at 20.18 WIB

10. December 15, 2024 at 16.01 WIB
