A Shepherd Chosen for Global Leadership
Robert Francis Prevost, a โฃseasoned missionary โwith deep โroots in Latin America, was appointed by Pope Francis in 2023 to โคlead the dicasteryโข for bishops, theโ Vatican โขoffice responsible for vetting candidatesโ for episcopal appointments worldwide. His subsequent creation as a Cardinal that same year underscores โthe โimportance of โฃthis role. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine, Cardinalโฃ Prevost’s path to this prominent position is markedโ by decades โof dedicated service.
Born September 14, 1955, in Chicago, illinois, to โa family with French, italian, andโข Spanish heritage, Robertโข Prevost initially pursued studies in mathematics and philosophy at Villanova โUniversity in Philadelphia. In 1977, he began his formation with the Augustinians, professing his vows four years later. He was ordainedโฃ a priest in Rome in 1982.
his commitment to missionary work led him to Peru in 1985-86, where he served โas chancellor of theโ Dioceseโ of โChulucanas and vicar of the cathedral. Following a โbriefโค return to โขIllinois to oversee pastoralโ vocations and โฃmissions for his province, โฃhe returned to Peru in 1988, dedicatingโข the โnext eleven years to variousโ roles within the Archdiocese of Trujillo.
In 1999, heโ was elected provincial for โขthe โคAugustinian Midwest Province,โ returning to Chicago. He then served as prior general of the Order โคof Saint Augustine for two consecutive six-year โterms,โค from 2001 toโ 2013. After aโฃ year as director of formation at the Saint Augustine convent in Chicago, alongside roles as first advisor and provincial vicar, he was appointed to the episcopate by Pope โขFrancis in November โข2014, returning him to Peru. He initially served as โคapostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo, becoming itsโค bishop in September 2015.
cardinal Prevost’s experience in Peru has given him a keen understanding of the political and social landscape of South America, a region where โthe Peruvian bishops have historically playedโ aโฃ vital role in maintaining institutional stability during timesโข of political upheaval.โค Peru, roughly twice the size of France,โข hosted Pope Francis in โขJanuaryโ 2018, providing an opportunity for the Pope to meet and become acquaintedโ with then-Bishopโ Prevost, and later receive him โin a private audience in 2021.
