Mexican Designers Shine at New York Fashion Week with ‘Mexican Pink’ Collection

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Mexico was present this Sunday at Fashion Week in New York with a group of designers, led by Benito Santos, who presented a collection inspired by their country, characterized by elegance and femininity.

“Mexican Pink”, which has become an emblem of national identity, is the name of the proposal that he brought to the New York catwalk, as part of the presentation of ONxSET, a platform to bring together designers, which is coming for the fourth year. to the city with the group, mostly Mexicans.

Santos is celebrating the 15 years of his eponymous brand, and dedicates them to Mexico, to highlight its culture, which he has taken to the catwalk on several occasions this year, including a proposal inspired by the charrería.

Her extensive proposal – all pink – is made up of sensual and elegant long dresses that accentuate the waist, very characteristic of her work, most with capes, short ruffled skirts, sets of pants with a jacket or bra, “to empower a woman” who likes to be the center of attention, the famous designer told Efe.

“I like to empower women and that they can continue fighting for that place that we have not given them for a long time due to culture, due to idiosyncrasy, but I think that today they are already occupying the place that they should always have,” she commented.

Santos decanted for tulle, silk, chiffon, lamé, metalized fabric, stonework, feathers, drapery and brocade for his collection in which features a large handcrafted flower, either on the waist or shoulders, and there was no shortage of transparencies.

“With this collection I culminate the celebration of my 15 years. For Mexicans this color has great meaning,” commented the couturier and highlights that it is a color that is in Mexican folklore clothing.

“It is very common for someone in Mexico to tell us I want a pink Mexican dress,” she said prior to her presentation.

For the couturier, this event today opens doors for Latin American designers and shows “all that cultural wealth that allows us to express our folklore, which is so rich. We Latinos are people who vibrate.”

Other Mexicans who brought elegance and their talent to Fashion Week were Iván Gallegos and Davis Márquez, the talent behind the Iann Dey brand, who in just 11 years have managed to make a name for themselves and bring their proposals to the important catwalks in New York, London and Paris.

Her collection inspired by nymphs was characterized by rich rhinestones, draping and transparencies “to highlight that mystical issue of nymphs” and some pieces simulated fins and scales, in a mix of fabrics and there was no lack of a futuristic touch.

The collection consisted of short and long dresses in light gray, indigo blue, gold, deep violet, and among them the combination of leather, handmade, and textile bodices stood out.

“The Iann Dey woman is a woman who does not like to go unnoticed,” said the creatives who say they always want to show the talent of their country “and put its name high” and who have dressed figures such as Naomi Campbell and Paris Hilton.

Also on the ONxSet catwalk was Manuel Tiscareno, who has stood out in particular for his wedding dresses, with which he closed his presentation today with a modern version of that very special piece, which consisted of a white jacket at the waist and a wide skirt with train.

There were also pieces made of leather and many transparencies in the variety of proposals, youthful, fresh and always elegant.

According to Denise Carranza, creator behind ONxSET, the objective of the event is to give the opportunity to Mexican and Latin American designers to have a platform where they can stand out internationally, as well as connect them with buyers from department stores and important fashion magazines and international media. .

Cuban Performance Artist Carlos Martiel Receives Maestro Dobel LatinX Art Award from Tequila Brand

Cuban Performance Artist Carlos Martiel Receives Maestro Dobel LatinX Art Award from Tequila Brand

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 7, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Cuban “performance” artist Carlos Martiel was honored this Thursday with the first Maestro Dobel LatinX Art Award given by this brand of tequila and the Museo del Barrio in New York, the main Latino cultural institution in the United States, where he has been invited to present an exhibition in 2024.

With this award, the Museo del Barrio, which will celebrate its annual gala tonight, kicks off its own Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, which each fall in the country highlights the contribution of Latino communities in art and culture, but also in the economy and society in general.

In an interview with EFE, Martiel (Havana, 1989) highlighted the “amplified visibility” that recognition will bring to Latino artists and said that in his case it will allow him to continue his work in a way that would not have been possible “for not having the resources”.

In addition to receiving a $50,000 grant, the artist will present a project at the Museo del Barrio in the spring of next year, and he announced that it will be a “compendium” of new and previous works.

“The award is a great honor, and even more so as a performance artist who works with his body,” said Martiel, who identifies as “queer” and Afro-Latino and often submits himself to physical pain in radical performances with which he invites to reflect on the “oppressed and marginalized throughout history”.

The artist, trained at the “San Alejandro” National Academy of Plastic Arts and at the Cátedra Arte de Conducta, of the Cuban exponent of performative art Tania Bruguera, has been living in New York for years and has presented his “performances” and other works in museums around the world.

The executive director of the Museo del Barrio, Patrick Charpenel, noted that the jury decided to award this inaugural LatinX award to the Cuban for exploring “beautifully the complexity and subtlety of racism and racialization, gender, immigration, and the legacy of colonialism in the Americas,” in a note.

Martiel, who left his country in 2012, assured that the “need for expression” is what led him to be an artist: “I started working with my body because I needed to express myself, but I couldn’t do an obvious job that put me in certain risks, so I decided to do a kind of minimal performance, no words,” he said.

Performances like those of the “Monument” series, in New York in 2021: on one occasion, he remained naked and handcuffed on a pedestal at the Guggenheim, and on another, he appeared at the Museo del Barrio also naked and covered in blood donated by minority groups or marginalized by “supremacist discourses” in the US.

Or other more extreme ones, such as “No Man’s Land”, at the Galleria Continua in Paris, in 2022, in which he showed himself naked, with his chest pierced with the metal poles of eight mini flags, those of the colonizing countries of Africa. .

“That is the power of my work, with the few elements that I manage I can communicate and say things,” he added.

Martiel said that leaving Cuba for the world and residing in New York has been a “great experience” that has transformed his life in every way since he has “everything at his fingertips,” which has opened his work to new topics. and problems beyond those that concerned him in the “context” of the island.

The artist said that he is still in contact “from a distance with part of the artistic community” in Cuba but acknowledged that it will be difficult to return to work there, as he verified when he returned for an exhibition in 2014: “I don’t have to stick to what he says instruction, an organization or a government”.

The Museo del Barrio gala, which raises funds and includes an auction, also honors this year the Cuban-American artist Coco Fusco for her Excellence in the Arts and the Mexican businessman Juan Beckmann, majority owner of José Cuervo tequilas, for his Outstanding Sponsorship of the Arts.

The sound of the drums was the constant throughout the journey of the different bands, floats and dancers.

Like these girls from Trinidad and Tobago, who gave free rein to their movements, filling the Eastern Parkway with color and lots of flavor.

And that is the essence of the parade, coming together as one culture and showing the joy of its people to the community.

Zenavia Booker came dressed for the occasion.

“For the ornament on my head I used wires to hold this figure that represents a gazelle, made of paper mache, and pheasant feathers, on my legs I have rooster feathers and on my ankles, I want to look like a tribe” says Booker.

In the Caribbean West Indies parade, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, the Panamanian Caribbean and the Dominican Republic participate,

Because in previous years this celebration has been marred by violence such as shootings, stabbings, stray bullets and murder, the NYC police are watching every corner of the route.

Carlos Nieves, sag. NYPD

“Today at the parade we have not had any incidents, everyone is enjoying themselves, we have enough officers to keep the day safe,” says Sergeant Carlos Nieves.

Ricardo Leiva, attended the parade: “Now I see that it is more protected, there are airborne, there are drones, there are police officers, a lot of security, I think we feel safe being here.”

This celebration attracts more than 2 million people who enjoy the flavors of the food, and the Caribbean music, the floats with their musical bands play the sounds of reggae, soca, calypso and other rhythms that invite everyone to dance and enjoy together.”

“In these times we should all unite and get closer, just have fun, I think we all need to have joy and forget a bit about all the bad things that happen in our city and the world,” he adds.

Politicians also paraded along the route, Mayor Erik Adams walking the entire way, as did Guillermo Linares alongside Reverend Al Sharpton.

Guillermo Linares, former New York State Assemblyman shows his pride:

“It is an honor for me as a Dominican, as a Caribbean, raising high the flag of all immigrants, here in this great city and in the state of New York.”
