Hasto Kristiyanto Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Bribery allegations
Jakarta – Hasto Kristiyanto, a prominent figure, has been sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Rp 600 million, with an alternative of six months imprisonment, following accusations of bribery. Teh Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor alleged that Hasto instructed his aide, identified as Aaron, through intermediaries, to destroy his cellphone. This action is believed to have occurred shortly before Hasto’s scheduled examination at the KPK on June 10, 2024. Additionally, Hasto is accused of directing his personal staff, Kusnadi, to also dispose of his cellphone around the same period.
The prosecution further contends that Hasto attempted to obstruct justice by allegedly attempting to bribe an official. The sum of rp 1.5 billion was reportedly discussed in this context, though only Rp 400 million was readily available.
In his defense, Hasto’s legal team has refuted the KPK’s claims, asserting that no witnesses in the trial directly implicated Hasto in bribery related to the alleged obstruction. Hasto’s camp also argued that the KPK prosecutor improperly introduced evidence by presenting investigators as witnesses.
This case highlights the complexities of corruption investigations and the legal battles that can ensue when allegations of bribery and obstruction of justice are made against public figures.
