Rift Valley Fever Casesโ Surge in โคsenegal, Raising Public Health Concerns
Dakar, senegal – โOctober 4, 2025 – โsenegal is experiencing a โconcerning rise in Rift Valleyโข Fever (RVF) cases, with the latest figures released by the โฃMinistry ofโฃ Healthโ showing aโข significant increase in both infections and fatalities. As โคof October 3rd, the country has recorded 78 confirmed casesโฃ and 11 deaths attributed to the viral disease, up from 56 cases โand 8 deaths reported โขjust one โขday prior on October 2nd.
This โrapid escalation โฃunderscoresโ the growing public health challenge posed by โขRVF, a zoonotic disease spread by mosquitoes and contact with infected animals.The outbreak primarily impacts communities in the Saint-Louis region, were 75 of the confirmed cases have been identified, including 45 patients who โhave recovered. Isolated cases have also been reported in the Louga (2 cases) andโข Matam (1 โrecovered case) regions. The Ministry of Health is urging citizens to exercise heightened vigilance and adhere โto preventative measures to โขcurb further spread.
Rift Valley Fever isโฃ a viral disease that โprimarily affectsโ animals, โbut can also โขinfect humans.Symptoms in humans range from โfever,muscle pain,and headache to โขmore severe complications โlike hemorrhagic fever,encephalitis,and vision loss. Outbreaks ofen follow periods of heavy rainfall,creating ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The current surgeโข highlights โthe vulnerability of Senegal‘s population and the importance of proactive โฃdisease surveillance and control efforts.โข
Alongside the RVF outbreak, the Ministry of Health also reportedโฃ 5 confirmed cases of โMPOX in the Dakar region sence August 22nd, โขwith one patient having โฃrecovered. No deaths related to MPOX haveโข been reported.โค The Ministry continues to emphasize โขthe importance โof collaboration between โขhealthโ workers, community relays, andโ the publicโ to effectively manage both outbreaks.
