Former Stellantis CEO Warns Portugal of Diminishedโ US โReliability, Predicts Shiftโ Towards china
Carlos Tavares, former CEO of Stellantis, asserted โฃthat Portugal can no longer depend on the United States as a reliable partner, speaking at a conference marking the ninth โanniversary of Jornal Econรณmico held at Aese Business School in Lisbon onโฃ Tuesday. Tavares โcharacterized the US as increasingly “transactional” despite its power.
He arguedโ that current US policy isโค inadvertently accelerating a global alignment with China, โperhaps leading โto its future dominance. According to tavares, โthe โUS, already the “most powerful and โrichest” nation, is pursuing further powerโ and wealth, driving countries away and into China’s sphere of influence. He specifically linked this shift to a potential “new world order” with Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
Tavares attributed perceived US commercial imbalances not to unfair โtrade practices, but to “poor productivity and worse quality in the physical goods manufacturing industry” within the US. He also criticized the US role within NATO,suggesting it โขprimarily serves to promote US weapons exports to Europe.
the former CEO was critical of the Paris climate agreement,โ describing it as an example of Western decline, arguing it โคunfairly demandedโฃ developing nations halt their progress while the West, having “destroyed the planet” through its ownโค development, imposed restrictions. โคHe noted the diminishing discussion surrounding global warming โin the political arena.
Tavares also expressed concern over a โค”delay in political vision” within the European Union, notably regarding the lack of aโ unified political destiny andโ the resulting internal rivalries between France, Germany, โand Italy. He concludedโ by stating the Western world must acknowledge its declineโ and address issues of “laziness” and “cancer bureaucracy” to remain competitive in a world of stagnant GDP growth.
