Michigan State Police to Distribute Life-Savingโ Naloxone as Opioid Crisis Persists
PAW PAW, Mich. – Inโ recognition of international Overdose โAwareness Day โon august 31stโค and the upcomingโข National Recovery โคMonth in September, the Michigan โStateโค Police (MSP) Paw โฃPawโข Postโ will beโ distributing naloxone,โ a critical medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, on September 2nd.
The initiative comes as Michigan continues to grapple with a risky rise in potentโ opioids. From January to June of this year, the MSP reportedโ 11 deathsโ involving carfentanil, a highly potent variant of fentanyl increasingly found in the illicit drug supply. โImportantly, investigations revealed thatโ carfentanil was not presentโ as the sole โsubstance in โany โofโ these fatalities. Ten of โขthe deaths involved cocaine, โฃand eight involved fentanylโค alongside carfentanil.
These tragic incidents were concentratedโ in several counties – ingham, Livingston, Eaton, Genesee, Oakland, and Wayne โฃ- but authorities are urging vigilance throughout Southwest michigan as the region faces ongoing challenges with opioid overdoses.
“Law enforcement โคrecognizes โwe cannot combat this crisis in โขisolation,” stated F/Lt. Scott Ernstes,โค commander ofโฃ the โฃMSP Paw Paw Post. “Distributing Naloxone, with the support of โour community,โฃ is aโฃ vital step in providing aโข life-saving โresource to those who need it.”
The MSP is also emphasizing preventative measures for the public:
Carry Naloxone: The medication is readily available without โa โคprescription and can be crucialโข in reversingโข an overdose.
Avoid Using Alone: Having someone presentโค whoโ is trained to respond to โขan overdose considerably reduces the risk ofโค fatality.
* Seek โSupport: Confidential support and treatment referrals are available โthrough the Michigan opioid Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357).
Naloxone will be available for distribution during regular business hours โat the Paw Paw Post, locatedโ at 43255 60th Ave.
