Cal โState Fullerton soccerโ playerโฃ Lauren Turner has died six weeksโ after being struck byโข aโข boxโข truckโ while riding an e-scooter with a teammate, the universityโฃ confirmed Wednesday. She was 19 years old.
Turner and fellow titan Ashlyn Gwynn, 7, were hit on Oct. 26 while traveling to โคa men’sโ soccer game. Turnerโ sustained severeโค head trauma and had been in intensive care since the accident. Gwynn also suffered severe injuries andโค was initiallyโค placed in the ICUโ before being moved to โa “Step Down” unit. This tragedy has deeply impacted the Fullertonโ community and casts a shadow overโฃ the women’s soccer program, which recently competed in the Big โWest Conference tournament.
The Tustin, California native had played in all โฃ20 matches her freshman year, scoring oneโข goal and providing one assist. In herโข second season, Turner appeared in allโค 10 matches, starting eight, and logging 595 โขminutes โon theโค field.
The driver โofโฃ the Ford Econoline E350โ remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, according toโ the student newspaper The Daily Titan. No arrests โhave been made.
“Lauren was the funniest, most charismatic,โค and โคloving teammate you could ever ask for,” her team said in a statement. “She wasโค the first toโ celebrate other โฃpeople’s wins. โShe is the true definition of an amazing โคperson. She always carried herself withโ compassion, kindness, andโ happiness.” Theโ team added, “the impact she made onโ the Titans women’sโ soccer program isโข immeasurable. She willโ be dearly missed by โeveryone but forever remembered by her Titan family. We love you Lauren, our No. โ5โ Forever.”
Gwynn’s โfamily announced her injuriesโ and recovery progress through a โขGoFundMe campaign launched โฃOct.30.
The โขTitan women’s soccer team honored turner and Gwynn throughout the seasonโ by wearing custom arm and wristโ bands bearing their initials โand โjersey numbers,โข “LT5-AG7.”โ A candlelight vigil forโ Turnerโ willโ be held wednesday at theโค on-campus โคsoccer stadium.
Fullertonโฃ secured the third seed in the Big West Conference โฃtournament, โขwinning against CSU โคBakersfield โin the quarterfinals before losing 1-0 to Cal Polyโข in the semifinals on Thursdayโ night.
