SABIC‘s New Film โฃTechnology Promises High-Temperature Performance for Next-Genโข Capacitors
Shanghai, China – โSABIC, a โขglobal leader in diversifiedโฃ chemicals, is โคset to present groundbreaking advancements in dielectricโค film technology atโ PCIM asia 2025, held in Shanghai from September โ24-26. Teh company will showcase its ultra-thinโ ELCRESโข โ HTV150 โคfilm, designed โฃto significantly improve the performance of capacitors โฃin demanding applications โlike electric vehicle (EV) โAC-DC inverters. Attendees can find SABIC at Hall N5, Booth F03.
The key innovation lies in theโค film’s โability to maintain high voltage operation at elevated temperatures – โฃup to 150ยฐC โฃ-โ with minimal voltage derating. This โaddresses a critical challenge in modern electrical systems where increasing power demands often โคlead to higher operating temperatures.
“Higher voltages are becoming increasingly common across a wide range of electrical applications,” explains Sergi Monros, Vice President, SABIC Polymers,โข Specialties BU. “While this trendโ boosts efficiency, it also introduces important engineering โhurdles. SABIC isโฃ committed to leadingโ the way with specialty materials โขthatโ excel under high voltage, high temperature, andโฃ harsh conditions, enablingโ our customers toโข develop the next generation of electrified components.”
Addressing Voltage Deratingโ – A Major Performance Bottleneck
Customary polymer film capacitors frequently enough suffer significant voltage reduction when exposed to high temperatures.โฃ Capacitors utilizing biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film, for instance, can experience a voltage derating of up to 50% at temperatures exceeding 125ยฐC,necessitating the use ofโฃ thicker, bulkier components.
Though, recent independent testing conducted โฃby Nichicon, a renowned Japanese capacitor manufacturer, demonstrates aโ substantial betterment with ELCRES HTV150. Nichicon’s results show minimal voltage derating โค- just 4.8% at 130ยฐC and 14% atโ 150ยฐCโค – when using capacitors madeโข with SABIC’s film. This allows for smaller, more โefficient capacitor designs without โคcompromising performance or reliability.
