Can Rufián Lead Spain’s Left? | elDiario.es Podcast

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 11, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Gabriel Rufián, the spokesperson for the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) in the Spanish Congress of Deputies, is exploring the possibility of forming a broad left-wing coalition to contest the upcoming general elections. The initiative, revealed in recent days, aims to unite a fragmented left, despite initial resistance from key parties including Sumar, Izquierda Unida, Podemos, the Basque Nationalist Party (BNG), and Bildu – even his own party, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, has expressed reservations.

The potential alliance comes as Russia continues to bolster its forces along NATO’s eastern flank, according to a senior European intelligence chief, though an attack on the alliance is not expected in the near term. As reported by the Associated Press, Russia’s military buildup is contingent on the outcome of the war in Ukraine, signaling a heightened state of alert within the alliance.

Rufián’s proposal, while facing significant hurdles, reflects a broader attempt to consolidate the left-wing vote in Spain. The move follows months of speculation and comes as Spain’s political landscape remains fluid. The ERC spokesperson is scheduled to meet with Emilio Delgado, a politician from Más Madrid, next week in Madrid, a meeting viewed by some as a crucial step in gauging support for the coalition.

Russia’s actions in Ukraine have prompted increased scrutiny of its relationship with NATO, with Moscow consistently opposing any potential Ukrainian membership. As detailed by Wikipedia, Russia demanded in late 2021 that Ukraine be permanently barred from joining the alliance, a demand that underscored the Kremlin’s concerns about NATO expansion.

NATO has strongly condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine, viewing it as a violation of international law and a threat to Euro-Atlantic security. According to NATO’s official website, the alliance continues to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The feasibility of Rufián’s coalition remains uncertain, given the existing divisions within the Spanish left. But, Spanish politics have a history of unexpected alliances, suggesting that the proposal should not be dismissed outright. The outcome of the negotiations between Rufián and Delgado, and the subsequent response from other left-wing parties, will be critical in determining the future of this initiative.

The development unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing Russian military activity and heightened tensions with NATO. The intelligence assessment that Russia is unlikely to attack NATO this year or next, while providing some reassurance, too highlights the need for continued vigilance and preparedness. The alliance’s eastern flank remains a focal point of concern, with Russia’s planned military buildup raising questions about its long-term intentions.
