Republican Matt Hall’s path to Michigan House Speaker

Republican Matt Hall’s path to Michigan House Speaker

WASHINGTON D.C. – August 7, 2025 – A collaborative dynamic between Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and House Speaker Matt Hall is navigating the state’s political landscape, even as national political tensions persist. This relationship was visibly on display in April when both attended a signing ceremony for executive orders and proclamations by President Donald Trump at the White House.

Governor Whitmer, a Democrat, has publicly emphasized her commitment to bipartisan cooperation. In a statement released in July, she affirmed her willingness to “deliver results for Michigan” through collaborative efforts. “that’s no different this term. We have a productive relationship and I appreciate Speaker Hall’s willingness to work together,” Whitmer stated.

Political analyst John Sellek, CEO of Lansing-based Harbor Strategic, highlighted Speaker Hall’s assertive approach to leadership within the Michigan Capitol. sellek noted Hall’s willingness to publicly discuss conversations with other legislative leaders, utilizing both praise and pressure to advance his agenda. Both Sellek and Hall previously served under former Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette.

Sellek connected Hall’s leadership style to his unconventional entry into state politics. unlike candidates who gradually ascend through local offices, Hall directly challenged and defeated an incumbent state representative. “He is not somebody who very carefully ran for school board and then ran for city council and then ran for House. he actually moved and challenged a sitting representative and beat him,” Sellek explained. “And he carries that same swagger and fearlessness into what he’s doing now.” Hall represents Michigan’s 93rd House District, encompassing portions of Calhoun and Eaton counties.

The dynamic between Whitmer and Hall is particularly noteworthy given the broader national political climate. Trump’s second term has been marked by increased polarization, and the ability of Michigan’s leaders to find common ground is seen by some as crucial for the state’s economic progress, particularly regarding the recent influx of semiconductor industry investment in Mundy Township, as highlighted in recent opinion pieces. The Sandisk semiconductor plant, a $7.5 billion project, is expected to create over 1,200 jobs in the region.

Benson, Duggan Outpace Rivals in Michigan Gubernatorial Fundraising

by David Harrison – Chief Editor July 26, 2025

Michigan GovernorS Race: James’ Fundraising Raises Concerns Amidst Strong Democratic Numbers

Lansing, MI – Republican Congressman John James, who announced his bid for Michigan governor in April, has reported raising $2.2 million with $1.85 million cash on hand. However, a significant portion of this total, approximately $750,000, was transferred from his congressional account. Adding to his campaign’s financial backing, the DeVos family reportedly transferred $5 million to a political action committee supporting James earlier this year.

Despite this substantial influx from the DeVos family, some Republican strategists express concern over James’ overall fundraising performance. “The ship does need to be righted here,” commented one strategist, suggesting that James’ fundraising numbers are not indicative of a winning statewide campaign. This sentiment could increase pressure on James to withdraw from the race, notably as prominent Michigan Republicans have publicly discouraged incumbent U.S. House members from pursuing other offices.

James, however, remains confident, stating in a recent press release that he is humbled by donor support and believes he is the only candidate capable of defeating Democratic contenders Gretchen whitmer and Jocelyn Benson. “We have a clear vision and in just three months are quickly building the resources necessary to accomplish the mission of restoring the american Dream for every Michigander,” James asserted.

On the Democratic side, incumbent Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, who launched his campaign in March, reported raising approximately $768,000 and has $312,000 on hand. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, who announced his candidacy in February, stated he raised $1 million with roughly $468,000 on hand, including nearly $183,000 transferred from his sheriff campaign account.Among Republican contenders, former House Speaker Tom Leonard, who entered the race in mid-June, reported raising $646,000, with nearly $463,000 of that amount transferred from a previous fundraising account. Former Attorney General Mike Cox has raised nearly $1.4 million and has approximately $1.9 million in cash on hand. Cox’s recent fundraising includes a $500,000 loan from himself to the campaign and $83,250 from a Cox leadership PAC, in addition to his prior personal investment of about $1 million.

Mamdani responded to Trump’s threat by stating it was “an attack on our democracy.” He is campaigning on a platform that includes limiting local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

did You Know? In 2023, New York City spent approximately $3.6 billion on services for migrants, highlighting the significant impact of immigration on the city’s budget NYC Comptroller.

False Claims About Mamdani’s Citizenship

Manhattan borough President Mark levine, a recent nominee for city comptroller, described Trump’s words as those of “an unhinged would-be dictator.”

Trump’s Support for Eric Adams

Trump also voiced support for Eric Adams, the current mayor, who is running as an independent in the November 4 general election after opting out of the Democratic primary amid a corruption scandal.Trump stated, “I helped him out a little bit. He had a problem.”

Federal prosecutors had previously indicted Adams on corruption charges, but the Justice Department, under Trump, intervened to drop the charges, citing interference with Adams’ ability to manage immigration enforcement. Several prosecutors reportedly resigned in protest.

Pro Tip: independent mayoral candidates often face challenges in fundraising and gaining media attention compared to candidates from established parties.
