Air Belgium receives the necessary millions and seems to save itself for the moment

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 31, 2022
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

A month and a half ago, reports surfaced that Air Belgium was urgently seeking 10 million euros to reach the end of the year. The 19 million euros that aviation veteran Niky Terzakis raised in March from his main Chinese shareholder Hongyuan had run out.

According to information from the Belgian newspaper, most of the money comes from new loans from shareholders of Hongyuan (6.5 million euros) and Sabena Aerospace Engineering (0.5 million). Sabena Aerospace also has Air Belgium as an aircraft maintenance customer.

Public shareholders also contribute. However, there is no government money involved. Their contribution is mainly through the extension from 2023 to 2025 of the repayment term of their convertible bond loan to the company.

The Hongyuan logistics group has a number of warehouses at Liège and Charleroi airports and is the largest shareholder of Air Belgium with 49% of the shares, followed by the Walloon public investment companies Sogepa and SRIW (together 35%) and the federal company of FPIM private equity (10 %). Sabena Aerospace is also part of the capital, just like Terzakis.

Financial situation
The Belgian airline has made a profit for one year (in 2019) in its seven years of existence. Around 47 million euros have gone up in smoke since 2016.

The rumor that Air Belgium was about to collapse was quickly dismissed by Terzakis. He indicated that the ten million euros were not for survival, but purely for in-depth investments. Furthermore, he said that while Air Belgium faces “financial challenges”, he knows of no airline that doesn’t, with the exception of Ryanair. Terzakis even plans to open new passenger routes.

Reminder: Zwanenburgbaan closed for months from Monday

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 31, 2022
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Zwanenburgbaan was built in the 1960s. During the main maintenance, the works will be carried out together with the contractor Heijmans, needed once every 40-60 years. During the maintenance period, the asphalt, the size of 86 football fields, will be completely renewed.

Schiphol will also renovate 12,000 square meters of runway markings and replace 6 kilometers of gutters and exits on and around the runway. All track lighting will be replaced by a more sustainable and reliable LED lighting installation. This affects nearly 6,400 lamps.

Furthermore, the platform station and the rainwater drainage system will be completely renewed.

Adapted use of the track

Planes that normally take off from or land on or from the Zwanenburgbaan will make more use of the Buitenveldertbaan in the coming months. The Schiphol-Oostbaan can also be used as a runway and a small part of the flights will be moved to the Kaagbaan.

Working landing system
During and after a major maintenance, Air Traffic Control Netherlands (LVNL) will replace the Zwanenburg runway’s Instrument Landing System (ILS). An ILS ensures that aircraft are supported to descend at a gradual angle to the runway.

After major maintenance has been completed in mid-April, the Zwanenburg runway can again be used as a runway, except when visibility is poor. So it will not be possible to land from the south in the period up to six weeks after the end of the maintenance (probably until the end of June).

Some activities on the ILS, such as measurements to verify proper system operation, can only be performed after major maintenance has been completed. During these runway and aerial measurements with a measuring aircraft, the runway is unavailable for air traffic. The measurements last several hours at a time and are scheduled during the day and night on certain days in May. The exact days and times will be communicated later.

SCHIPHOL – KLM employees, who want to get rid of the Christmas sweater, cash it in on Marktplaats. This is evident from RTL’s research. The news channel discovered that the auction site is full of unwrapped gifts, including the KLM jersey. The piece of clothing they could buy as a Christmas present for a small fee is now often offered on Marktplaats, for around 60 euros.

German newcomer Universal Sky Carrier on the road with the Airbus A340

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 24, 2022
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The two aircraft purchased are an Airbus A340-300 (registration: D-AUSC) and an A340-600 (registration: D-AUSZ). Both machines have flown for South African Airways in the past and are parked in Johannesburg as of 2020.

The A340-300 has 253 seats, of which 215 are in Economy and 38 in Business Class. The larger A340-600 has 317 seats, including 275 in Economy and 42 in Business Class. Cargo capacity is 53 and 72 tons respectively.

The two aircraft can be booked for both passenger and cargo flights. A combination is also possible, writes USC on its website. In addition, it will “soon” completely convert an aircraft into a freighter. Whether this affects any of the A340s is unknown.

Aerotelegraph reports that USC does not yet have a permit to fly (AOC). An initiation of the operation therefore does not appear imminent in the short term.

USC was founded in 2020 by “aviation professionals with years of experience”. The place of work is Frankfurt Airport.
